I'm not sure if anyone can give me any insight but will customs give me a hard time for visiting Istanbul for a few hours on my layover.

I fly into Istanbul at 3pm and was hoping to grab some dinner and explore a little bit of the city while on my 16 hour layover.

If not what the hell do I do in a airport for 16 hours.

I've done this before in other countries. Basically just got a cab and had him drive me around to see the sites then got a local meal. Never had a problem, just make sure to get back to the airport with plenty of time to spare.

Just ask the customs dudes to tell you where the hookers and blow are.

I can see this not being an issue in places within the EU but was not sure about Turkey.

There are not lockers at Ataturk that I'm aware of, for security reasons, I would think. Leave your baggage at the baggage service counter. There's an attendant and you pay to get your baggage out when you are ready to go back through Customs.
Here's a link to it:

Make sure you get your Visa before going through the customs line, the windows are before you hit customs.

I am guessing you got a cheap flight on Turkish air that comes with a shitty layover?

Yes, 16 hour layover on the way to Prague but only a 3 hour layover on the way back. I've always wanted to visit Istanbul though.

I paid $625 for round trip.

Jesus. You sure they put enough gas in the plane to make it all the way back?

If it's a layover, your checked bags will get put on the connecting flight for you. Just bring a change of clothes in your carry on. I just did this exact thing in October.

Make sure to get to the airport pretty early when you return for your next flight. You have to go through Security to get to the terminal then Customs then another Security checkpoint if flying back to the States. It takes awhile.

I'm good at finding cheap airfare deals. Last year I found a round trip to London for $700. The best time to buy tickets is 45-60 days leading up to your departure. I find that kayak.com is the best place to buy tickets.

I'm sure with oil being so cheap this helps out too.

Yep, flew Turkish Airlines to Munich. Had the same 16 hour layover. Stayed overnight in a hotel then came back to the airport afterwards.
