dealerships buying used cars...

do most dealerships buy used cars outright, without taking a trade at all?? just giving you cash for them?

what if you trade in a more expensive car for a cheaper car? Do they pay you the difference in cash??

I would imagine they'd have to. But if your buying a much cheaper car they arent going to give you jack for your nice one.

they may be willing to give you wholesale if they think they can turn it for a profit, but that is mainly small car lots not dealers

Yes to both, depending on the dealership.

When shopping for a car and the salesman, person gives you a price for your car ask him if that is a "bid to buy price" meaning what the dealership will give you even if you don't buy a car from them.
If they won't quote you a bid to buy price, move on. That's how you determine the value of your trade and therefore, what to offer for their car.

With the market the way it is nowadays, most used car lots will look into purchasing from a private owner simply because they won't have to pay auction fees and may be able to "steal" a decent car. Dont expect trade in value if you want a dealership to buy it though.

Many dealers buy used cars at auction because they make such a good profit on them.

Selling your used car directly to a dealership will result in a more thorough reaming than than that fat chucklefrick on Pawn Stars will give you.
