Ketamine, popularly known as the psychedelic club drug Special K, has been around since the early 1960s. It is a staple anesthetic in emergency rooms, regularly used for children when they come in with broken bones and dislocated shoulders. It’s an important tool in burn centers and veterinary medicine, as well as a notorious date-rape drug, known for its power to quickly numb and render someone immobile.

Experts are calling it the most significant advance in mental health in more than half a century. They point to studies showing ketamine not only produces a rapid and robust antidepressant effect; it also puts a quick end to suicidal thinking.

Interesting stuff

Ketamine is also used on the battlefield. Learned this just a couple years ago. Very interesting.

“That ‘horse drug’” is now one of the most effective tools available. Combat medics rate ketamine as more effective than morphine or fentanyl in providing rapid relief of severe pain, according to an ongoing survey conducted by the Naval Operational Medical Lessons Learned Center, Pensacola, FL.

Ketamine is the best drug in my Anesthesia arsenal.....unfortunately, while it does all kinds of things well i.e. sedate, pain relief........while not compromising the hemodynamic stability of the patient it also has one major side effect.......it's got potent hallucinogenic properties.

While I agree the study has merit, you can't give Ketamine to a depressive person without them thinking a shark is trying to eat them as they become non suicidal....

Nevermind I just read it's 1/10th my anesthetic doses............so that eliminates that.

What is causing depression? Could it be the consequences of living free?

Pharmaceutical companies have known this for a long time and are racing to get approval for related medicines that have a similar mechanism of action without the "fun", addictive potential and bladder issues. GLYX-13 is one that was recently approved if anyone wants to read up on it's MOA

Could be the fear of dying hard too.

I have a friend who is a combat medic who said it kicks morphine's arse. It's also been shown to be more sedating, and more amnesic, so the rates of PTSD after the fact are actually reduced.

This is such a stupid article.

It was known to cause feeling of euphoria and happiness before it was used as a date rape drug.

This is like saying about cars: "Lethal Mobile Metalic Death Machine New Use: Transportation."

Your title implies that date rape is the primary use of Ketamine, which I don't believe is accurate.

I've never heard of Ketamine being used as a date rape drug. Rohypnol sure, but not Ketamine. Maybe I'm just too old now.

That may be what you think it implies.

But it really implies that the term date rape is more well known than ketamine for the general public

So when chicks aren't depressed they're far more likely to have sex with you, and that's considered date rape?
