Lived in Houston for 10 years and grew to like it but it really is pretty full of suck
Been in Dallas for about 7 months now and will say that uptown Dallas is far better than any area of Houston. The number of smoking hot chicks per block is off the charts. Seems a lot of the 30k millionaire douches have gone hipster douche. But the area near and around west (or is it east) village is awesome.
I have to say so far I prefer Dallas by a good bit

We'll be considering Houston in the near future. We have young kids and havent done the bar scene in a while. I've spent a little time over there and I like what I've seen so far. I'd be interested to hear your viewpoint. Are you young and living it up or married with kids? I spent time in Dallas 15 yrs ago and wasn't find of the pretentiousness. May be different at this stage in my life where I don't care about all of that. May just have to move back to ATL.

Dallas isn't really a city, but more a collection of super-corporate suburbs surrounding downtown and a handful of nice , but exclusive, neighborhoods. Ever hear someone say they are from Dallas, but then say, "well really Plano, or Arlington, or Carrollton or Frisco"?

Dallas is better than Houston in every single way other than striverism. Houston people are more genuine IMO, although there are certainly lots of good folks in Dallas.
So I'd choose Dallas. But the con on Dallas is pretty huge. You're talking about a sun scorched part of the country with limited aesthetic appeal where the residents believe people from Monaco and Paris wish they could live in Dallas. But you get a relatively wealthy and clean city with lots to do, decent governance for a big city, strong economy, decent sports options, etc.
Another downside that impacts most everywhere in Texas is the lack of geographic appeal. If Dallas was close to either mountains or decent beaches it'd have a strong argument as the top big city in the country.

No different that Houston or Atlanta, which are all similar in that regard. There is a move for folks to move back into all 3 cities, however.

The suburbs, yea. Not so much when you get into Dallas. Downtown has tons of good, non chain restaurants.
The suburbs are full of chains and strip malls because there are so many people living here. It's built so that people don't have to go far to shop or eat. It's all about convenience for families, not kids partying or something.
There are some nice non chain and local small chain restaurants here though.
