present OT ballers excluded of course...
How can we fix this? I fear we're headed to institutionalized underemployment in this country.

Only 36% of college grads have jobs that pay at least $45,000, a sharp decline from the 1990s, after adjusting for inflation.
Perhaps most depressingly, the percentage of young people making below $25,000 has topped 20%, worse than in 1990. In other words, those with a bachelor's diploma were better off before the digital revolution.

If this comes as a surprise, that's because images from popular culture push the idea that young college graduates are shrugging off bad employment prospects with their do-it-yourself attitude.
In our collective imagination, millennials are saying, "No jobs? That's OK — I'll create my own!" And then they solve their own problems by heading to Silicon Valley with little more than an iPhone and an idea to create the next hip app that supposedly will turn them into overnight millionaires.

Bring back forced retirement?

I would like to see how many of the 36% that make over $45k are living in areas with a higher cost of living vs lower cost of living. Say 60% of that 36% live in cities like D.C, SF and NYC, that means the remaining 40% are spread out over more cities, and the numbers are skewed.
what can we do to fix this? Pay people what they're worth, and not try to cut corners and save money by offering people less than what they deserve. As owners, managers and leaders, we need to be willing to fork over money for talent. Nobody should have to live in poverty if they're willing to work.
The cost of getting that degree is only increasing and the people in charge don't care - see this article from the front page of reddit today as an example

So.. millennials are starting out with higher debt (student loans), less jobs to choose from, and the starting pay is terrible, unless you are in an in-demand field - and even then, you aren't escaping those student loans.

Don't devalue the worth of a college diploma by telling all kids that college will be neccessary to achieve success in life.
Oops. Too late...

true fricking story. and then as the naive college student that you are, ou go for that master's and dig yourself more in debt, only to find out people aren't willing to hire you because while you have an impressive education, you have no real life work experience.

We also have to take into account a more competitive job market both from outsourcing and more H1B visas. When you increase the size of the labor force what happens to wages?

Here's a tip: Don't think of any job as beneath you as your slinging coffee at Starbucks.

Wages are going to stay low - basic supply and demand, except that in this case we have artificially created the supply, because companies don't need to outsource jobs - companies choose to to save money and line the pockets of management and investors. frick the employees.
Another thing - non sequitur to outsourcing/H1B visas:
Silicon Valley (as mentioned in the OP). f you don't know your way around tech and know basic development/coding - you're probably not making more than $50k/year and you're being driven out of the market because you can't afford to live off that salary. Or you rent a place with 4 others. That's no way to start your "adult" life.

Baby boomers die off or retire and we ban technology from advancing any further.

They wanted "hope & change"? Well, they got it and then some.

I'm a member of that 36%, I don't live in any of the cities you listed, and I have zero student debt. I must be one of the super lucky ones.
