Watching the Ali stuff on tv and reading on the web it's like they have had these death tributes in the hopper for years.

Does anyone know how far in advance they have these done?

What other celebs do you think the networks have the obit already written on?

I'll say Magic, Tyson, Jordan? Possibly Artie Lange? Ha

I used to work in media. About five years in advance on average. For big celebrities like Ali, more like a decade.

Thanks. Any insight on the criteria of who gets one done that far out?

I thought this same thing last night. What a job to be the journalist that prepares for someone to die. Think they're excited when the time comes that their hard work is able to be shown?

Seriously it's very morbid. Just pretend if a close relative asked you to write their obitb before they die. Very creepy

A guy like Ali or Prince. Someone like Screech from Saved By The Bell gets a quick on the spot write up. The lead singer of Creed somewhere in between those two categories. Hope that helps.

So the networks look up when a famous person is going to die in their celebrity death almanac and then they just subtract 5 years to see when they should start working on the tribute? That's impressive. They'd be unstoppable in the annual tigerdroppings celebrity death pool

You don't seem to know what an average is.

Good luck in life.

I majored in mass Comm and concentrated in journalism at LSU.

One of my teachers was a former editor at the LA Times. This stuff is prepared far in advance. They just addin dates and a couple paragraphs at the top.

I'm also going to guess they take likelihood of death into account. Muhammed Ali was old for a boxer and had a serious illness. Wasn't that hard to know it was coming. Same for someone with a destructive lifestyle.

If it's an accidental death you'd need to throw something together quickly.

Jon Stewart did something along those lines when Lance Bass came out of the closet. He noted how fast every media outlet had an extremely gay picture ready to go. He said of was just like the celebrity death tributes. It was prepared in advance.

They keep the clips in a file ready to go and a producer and editor throw them together with a talking head narrating a script so they seem fresh.

In all seriousness though, Eastwood has to be up there.

Ali has been pretty sick for a while. It's not like you need Nostradamus running the sports department to figure out that an international icon like Ali might go soon so have some clips ready.
