Could you be happy with only making 35K a year??

i realize this is the OT where the median salary is over $250,000, but if you enjoyed what you did and only made $35,000 with no room for advancement, could you live a good life for you and your family (in the south)?

ok, let me edit this slightly. if $35,000 isn't enough for you to survive on, then how much would be sufficient?? $60,000? remember, this doesn't include spouse's salary.

also, even though $35,000 might sound low, it also has perks i forgot to add. free health/dental insurance, retirement options, 401k, etc. you would also have set hours that never change, no overtime, you get EVERY weekend off, every government/national holiday off, a long weekend every Thanksgiving, a week off for Christmas/New Years, and two months off every single summer. yeah, i wonder what career i'm talking about

No, I don't think I could. Not a knock on folks that do, but adding up my expenses right now, I don't know how they do it.

Possible if you are single.

You can have a happy family as long as they don't want to have shite.

I can see the 2 Kia's in the driveway, pantry full of Ramen noodles, and double wide trailer now...

seriously I don't see how people live on that income level. Can you make 35K and get food stamps/rent assistance or does that require unemployment?

No one is living the good life anywhere in the US on $35K a year.

The people who live check to check seem to be the happiest people.

My dry cleaning bill/year...

Just kidding...

But looking back, I made $19,500 back in 98 with a masters with the EBR Public School Sysytem, and I made it work.

But to do it today, that would be a big NO.

re: Could you be happy with only making 35K a year??
I will say this. I am 30 and make right at $100k. I work my arse off, like 70 hours a week at least, actually in the office right now, just taking a break. I am always stressed and am not real happy unless it is friday night or a saturday. I have really considered taking a lesser position in the company in order to have more time to spend with my family and just being less stressed in general. $35k would be too big of a cut for me, but I would be ok taking a $30k cut and making $70k or so. I have recently come to the conclusion that life is about being happy and not making a bunch of money to spend on material stuff.

I'd say that's probably about right. I could make about a 1/3 more if I worked the extra 15-20 hours. At a certain point, it becomes about quality of life.

Inflation has probably made it harder to do nowadays.

I would have to be rich in environment. Only place that this could work for me would be in the mountains or on a beach. But finding a place within these guidelines is a bit of a stretch.
