Some families gearing up for the start of school have noticed that one important item for kids with severe food allergies has gotten a lot more expensive. With some retailers now charging more than $700 for a set of EpiPens, allergists say they’ve heard from some concerned parents. The marker-sized injectors are filled with epinephrine to stop an anaphylactic reaction.

The rising cost of the life-saving allergy medicine EpiPen is forcing many families to make tough choices.
The cost of EpiPens from the pharmaceutical company Mylan have gone up about 480 percent, from about $100 in 2009 to more than $600 this year. For most who need them, they have to get more than one.
"It's not uncommon for somebody who requires EpiPen, for a child, to have them in many different places," mother Katie Badura said.
Mylan manufactured 87 percent of all epinephrine auto-injectors prescribed last year, which is more than 3.6 million EpiPen kits. Forbes estimates the cost of the actual medicine is about $1 per dosage.

So some douchebag bought the company and is jacking up prices again?
Capitalism or Douchebagism?

$700?? wow, that took my breath away.

Not just that but they expire every year so you are constantly buying Epi pens.

that price point really stings

I have paid more than $700 for many of my kids activities. This doesn't seem unreasonable. Now if they were used every single day I may see it differently.
I see kids doing car washes for travel baseball. Is this more important than that?

I suppose that was funny in your head?

Won't really effect the co-pay right? I would think something like this would be about a $25 co-pay on average.

The problem is that they expire, and you are supposed to buy new ones each year.
Got some coupon that covered the difference when I had to get a set for my son.

That's $700 after insurance.

I really don't see how you think the first sentence in anyway justifies the second one. $700 is fricking insane.

I almost choked on my peanut butter and jelly sandwich when I saw that price.

and the actual medicine only costs about $1.00 per dose. I'm a firm believer in the capitalist system but this is just straight up robbery.

This is outrageous. Kind of kills the argument that capitalistic businesses don't need strict government regulation.

i have to carry epi (shellfish allergy) And i buy a couple sets of these each year. Sometimes i forget them in the vehicle for a few days, and the hot sun will ruin them amd need new ones. They expire every yr also. I heard price just went up, but also heard they are trying to get epi pens on the preventative meds list to make it cheaper for insurance. Its a shame someone would jack prices up that high for a dose of medicine that could save someones life.
