My sister came in town and said her 2010 Equinox had no A/C. Mechanic said (dealership that sold car) nothing was wrong with the compressor and that it was electrical.
Long story short, I look at it today and the compressor clutch is gone. This five pound part is just missing and the bolt it attached to is sticking out. Thanks to Amazon prime a new compressor is coming in tomorrow, but still that has to be a mechanical issue. So i look it up and find out it's a common issue with Chevrolet 4cyl vehicles.
This car already has three recalls, and the worst being an oil consumption issue. (cylinder three is burning oil/ bad o rings). Seeing all these issues on a five year old Chevy, while my nearly 10 year old Tacoma is still factory fresh under the hood bothers me.

Going to try and trade it in on a Venza or a Camry as soon as I fix it up. I used to love Chevy, but just seeing the issues with the recalls and this first hand.....

Oh well. Not a thread for the masses, just curious if anyone else has seen this, and if you have a Chevy and your A/C fails, look to see if your clutch is still on the compressor. (never in my life have I seen one come off)

GM quality was not very good in 2007-2011. Engines and transmissions are ok, but interior bits, hubs, struts and other components were suspect.

They were pushing suppliers for the cheapest price possible.
Bankruptcy will do that.

I looked hard at the 2015 Z06, but I just wasn't confident that they've totally righted the ship.

So you are going to trade in your sister's whip? Better check with her first.

never heard of such a thing...and honestly, can't see how it would happen without a hell of a ruckus...figured at least the belt would have raised some cane or something....

did the center hub just break out of the clutch, or what?...

The whole clutch assembly is just gone. Of course she says "it still blows air"

The rust could have been from heat of a stuck clutch

Looks like it's been wet a lot and the little metal straps rusted thru causing the clutch to sling off. I can't believe she didn't hear come off.

Tell me what you mean.

A stuck clutch wouldn't operate and produce cold air, correct?

I'm still guessing water intrusion.

Im saying the compressor could have locked up and the clutch spun and got red hot and eventually snapped. After metal gets really hot, it rusts very easy.

If the rust is only in that one spot around the compressor then that would expain it.

Yeah but if it locked up the belt would've made a helluva squealing noise and the little v ribs would be shiny as all hell and they aren't.

I have a 2005 Chevy Colorado and the air will only blow on the highest setting.
