Is this issue of tolerance one of the reasons many people refer to marijuana as a 'gateway' drug? After a while, a user might move up to a harder (stronger) illegal substance in order to get his 'high'?

I never took it as a tolerance issue. I always thought it as a gateway drug, because some people had the attitude of "Well I tried one illegal drug, why not try another?"

The gateway drug narrative has declined in recent years IMO since it's more widely accepted.

My friend who smokes is currently in law school, he bought an oz and it lasted him the whole semester just taking gb's. If you don't go crazy and smoke like a blunt a day it really doesn't cost that much.

I hear you but read the info below.
quote:

Higher Rates of Alcohol, Drug Problems

"By studying twins, we were able to compare pairs of individuals of the same age, same family background and -- in the case of identical twins -- individuals with exactly the same genes," Lynskey explains. "But these twins differed in one important respect: One had chosen to begin using cannabis before 17, but the other had not."

By the time these twins were interviewed in their late 20s and early 30s, the early marijuana users had developed higher rates of problems with alcohol and other drugs. Some 46 percent reported that they later abused or became dependent upon marijuana, and 43 percent had become alcohol dependent.

The early marijuana users also used other drugs at higher rates, including cocaine and other stimulants (48 percent) heroin and other opioids (14 percent) and hallucinogens (35 percent).

The underlined part makes me wonder.

It wasn't/isn't a gateway for me. So I personally don't believe that but don't care to argue others over that. There are so many ways to look at it. They already have the desire to get high and do things they just start with weed because it's cheaper. Not that weed made them be like oh shite that's great. Got to try coke now. Probably about the same!!

What about the other way around? Introduce alcohol or cigarettes to one instead of weed?

Someone who goes thru an ounce every 2 weeks is either wasting a ton, or is just a big time pothead who sits at home playing video games all day. If sharing with other people then it would make more sense. I'd say am ounce would last around 4 weeks for 1 person on average

Actually if he's spending $400 per month, using the average price of coffee in the US as a basis, that translates into 10 cups of coffee daily that the average coffee drinker would have to purchase to spend the same on coffee as he does on pot. As to who consumes the pot or coffee, that's a moot point since we're only discussing the cost of the product and not it's consumption.
this whole coffee argument is retarded, the prices for marijuana in this thread have been for high end marijuana, low end marijuana can be less than $50 per ounce. The coffee prices thrown around have been an average, so the 50 cent cup of coffee from a gas station is averaged in with the $6 cup of double espresso vanilla skinny latte with whipped cream.

For the love of all that is good, it's not a fricking argument. That came from a joking discussion I was having with a guy who said something about "people spending that much on coffee" or something along those lines. That gave me a idea to do a compare and contrast on pot vs. coffee. I goggled it and found the average price of a cup of coffee in the US sits at $1.38. You do know what "average" means, right? That means that's the price in the middle. Being in the middle means there will be coffee prices much lower (gas stations) and much higher (Starbucks). The norm when comparing two things is to look at the "average". Had I an agenda here I would have taken the low end of the coffee scale (.50 cent at the gas station) and compared it only to the highest pot number ($400 per ounce on Colorado) to try and "prove" whatever anti-pot point you think I was trying to make. But that is not what I did.

And for the record... The only retarded argument to be had here is you getting too damn paranoid and defensive over your pot. Here's a hint for all the pot smokers out there... Stop being so fricking defensive when someone who does not smoke pot wants to have a discussion on the subject. You come off as being paranoid and it's quite off putting and only serves to hurt your "cause".

Your comparison is still taking the average of one thing (coffee) and comparing it to the top end of another (marijuana), then proceed to talk about it for 5 pages of discussion like it's some sort of relevant comparison.

And what leads you to believe that I am a pot smoker, and therefore paranoid about something?

I compared it first to the $300 - $400 per ounce price range which according to the story was what it's going for in Colorado. Later on that guy gave me a price of $200 per ounce and I changed the numbers to reflect that. I only used the numbers because, like 99.9% of all non-pot smokers, I have no idea what is or is not a "high" price for an ounce of pot.

As for why I believe you to be a pot smoker, you threw out a number on the price of pot as though you knew what is or is not a normal price for pot. Remember posting this?....

quote:

low end marijuana can be less than $50 per ounce

If you don't smoke, why do you keep up with the normal prices of pot?
