My father in law enjoys Civil War memorabilia. He has pistols and confederate currency and such in a display case in their living room.
He is also a very religous fellow so this year I bought him an 1861 soldier issued new testament pocket bible.(cant really make out the notations written in it)
it's a really neat little item regardless
anybody else making civil war era purchases this holiday? If so what?

I bet Mitch would sell you the Robert E. Lee statue for cheap.

Confederate flags seem to be all the rage these days.

The Lee Circle statue may be for sale before too long. That'd be awesome in your Dad's front yard.

Or the Battle of Liberty Place obelisk. The PGT Beauregard Statue would be a great centerpiece as well.

The gift of all gifts for a Civil War buff would have to be an authentic Civil War rifled musket or smooth bore musket from the period (the smooth bore would have a percussion cap rig rather than the Napoleonic flintlock.)
If you can't afford a real one, get him a replica of the sort that the re enactors use.
OR if he likes to play "dress up and role play" you could get him a Southern Belle costume in his size. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin'.

Are you looking just at period things or are you looking for anything on the WBTS?
If they like to read, I would suggest Shelby Foote's 3 volume The Civil War: A Narrative.
The Shaara books (The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara; Gods and Generals, Last Full Measure, A Blaze of Glory, A Chain of Thunder, The Smoke at Dawn and The Fateful Lightning by Jeff Shaara) are really good. Killer Angels is about Gettysburg. G&G is the lead up to Gettysburg in the east, with Measure being from the end of Gettysburg to Appomattox. The final four are western theater and deal with Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga and Sherman's march from Atlanta through the surrender of the Army of Tennessee.
If they have ancestors that fought, look to see if there are books written on the unit. Even if not, A Scythe of Fire about the 8th Georgia is really good, as is Cobb's Legion Cavalry about the 9th Georgia cav that served under JEB Stewart and Wade Hampton.
Too late now to order in time for Christmas, but again, if they have ancestors that fought, you can get copies of the compiled military service records. You can get these through the National Archives or you can order from Broadfoot publishing. You need to know the soldier's name and unit.

One of the nicest WBTS gift I ever received was the documentary by Ken Burns

A bottle of Snapple tea. Because they have a slave ship on the logo or so the rumor goes.

Another really good book he is certain to like is called "Co. Aytch: A Confederate Memoir of the Civil War"
Of the 120 men who enlisted in "Company H" (Or Co. Aytch as he calls it) in 1861, Sam Watkins was one of only seven alive when General Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee surrendered to General William Tecumseh Sherman in North Carolina on April, 1865. Of the 1,200 men who fought in the First Tennessee, only 65 were left to be paroled on that day. "Co. Aytch: A Confederate Memoir of the Civil War" is heralded by many historians as one of the best war memoirs written by a common soldier of the field. Sam R. Watkin's writing style in "Co Aytch" is quite engaging and skillfully captures the pride, misery, glory, and horror experienced by the common foot soldier.
