New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration has scrapped its request for bids on a contract to remove Confederate monuments from the city, citing a court order.

The bids were due to be opened Monday (May 23), but the city canceled the solicitation.

Landrieu's attempt to remove monuments to Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and P.G.T. Beauregard has been put on hold since March 25 when the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an order saying the statues had to be kept in place while it considered a request by preservationists to block removal altogether.

Looks like the monuments ain't going anywhere.

I am sure the mayor will be on shortly to explain how this will impact ongoing crime fighting efforts.

If this means the "but, but, but the statues" reply goes away, I'm 100% behind it. Not really sure which was worse - the people who wanted them removed or the people who used their removal as a quip in every damn NOLA thread on this board.

I'd love to see who actually bid on the job.

You would have to be a fool to bid on this job.

Why isn't BLM volunteering to take the statues down for free?

Maybe they can cover them in purple linen like the Catholics do during Lent.

The monuments won't be safe until Mitch is out of office

by the time the court case wraps up, and the bidding process finishes, he'll be gone.

also, I'd be shocked if it doesn't turn out that the cost to remove them without damaging the statues themselves ends up making this way more costly than Mitchie claims.

Most of them won't sit on the porch all day without expecting a govt. check. You think they'd actually do some work for free?

The Lee Statute especially isn't going to be cheap.

Mitch needs to redouble his efforts to get rid of these things. And the City Council needs to spend an inordinate amount of time addressing the monuments, to the exclusion of everything else "important" like crime, quality of life, etc. If Mitch doesn't get these monuments removed immediately, we are all doomed.
