Cops described Roof as extremely dangerous and pleaded with the public to come forward with information about the case.

After releasing a description of Roof on Wednesday night, police circulated a wanted poster with Roof’s name on it on Thursday morning. Hours after putting out the wanted posted, police announced Roof’s arrest.

According to Dot Scott, president of the Charleston NAACP, a female survivor told her family members the gunman initially sat down in the church before opening fire.

A shooting survivor reported that the gunman reloaded five times and said “I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over the country.”

Scott told the Post and Courier in Charleston that the gunman told the woman she could escape and said he was letting her live so she could the world what he had done.

Nine people were killed in the attack, including Clementa Pinckney, who’s the church’s pastor and a state senator.

Obama said he and First Lady Michelle were friends with Pastor Pinckney. “To say our thoughts and prayers are with them … doesn’t say enough to convey the heartache and the sadness and the anger that we feel,” he said.

A five-year-old girl escaped the race hate massacre by playing dead, it was revealed early today.

A black woman churchgoer was also freed by the white shooter so she could “tell the world what had happened.”


Family members who were being briefed by chaplains after the shooting reportedly said that a five-year-old girl survived the attack after she was told to play dead by her grandmother.

It has been suggested that the shooting was timed to coincide with two large political rallies in the city, as just hours before Rev Pinckney met with Hillary Clinton as part of her presidential campaign and Jeb Bush was also due to visit Charleston Thursday before canceling his appearance in the wake of the massacre.

The FBI identified the shooter as Dylann Roof of Columbia, South Carolina. An uncle of Roof's said he recognized the man in the surveillance photo as his nephew.

"The more I look at him, the more I'm convinced, that's him," Carson Cowles, 56, told Reuters in a phone interview.

Law enforcement agents were present at Roof's home, Cowles said, adding he believed the shooter's father had recently bought him a .45-caliber handgun as a birthday present.

It happened about 9 p.m. at a church on Calhoun Street according to WCIV-TV.


They said multiple people were shot, and the shooter is not in custody.
