Going to be buying a house soon, so I was wondering, what is the best way to choose a real estate agent? (Besides going with the hottest one)

Obviously I would guess that it would be important for the agent to be familiar with the area I'm buying in, but other than that, how did you guys decide who to go with? In the end, does it really matter that much as long as you get the house you want? This will be our first home, so admittedly, I know nothing about the criteria involved in choosing

Research the agents and don't hire a noobie.

If you are comfortable with them then check the property yourself.

Don't use an agent. They suck. Google and ask the OT and MT.

If you're just buying it doesn't matter. Use a friend of a friend.

If you're selling, get someone you're comfortable with.

Look at for sale by owners, and don't get an agent. Get a feel for the value (pay someone to appraise it) and subtract 6% for not using agents. It is a simple process.

If you know the area you want, don't go with a real estate agent. Check realtor, zillow, trulia, and drive around the neighborhood. Your best bet is a For Sale by Owner, bc you typically get a lower price bc they don't have to pay commission.

If you do decide to go w/ an agent; DO NOT sign a contract. They will show you houses for free and/or even give you a link to their MLS portal so you can view the houses at your own pace for free.
