I don't understand the hate it gets.

The part that tourists actually visit is amazing. It's beyond Michigan Ave where you get murdered.

Part of Chicago is awesome, unfortunately a huge portion of it is a war zone.

Went for a conference last year. Stayed one block off Michigan in River North. That area was freaking awesome. Naha and The Gage were fantastic restaurants. Museum of Industry and Science was wonderful. Really wanted to do one of the architectural boat tours and/or a helicopter tour but didn't have time.
The pizza...meh.

There are a lot of nice areas, but I prefer NYC because it doesn't shut down at 9PM

Is it south chicago or more like south-south chicago?

If you're young and have cash, there aren't many better places to be on planet earth from like May to September.

Downtown Chicago is surprisingly small especially compared to NYC

Not true. I lived at the corner of Lincoln and Irving Park for years, a mile or so west of Wrigley. Sure it's a rough area, like a lot of the city, but not unbearably so. If you live there, you know the areas to avoid, know how to take care of yourself on the street–and you'll be okay.

Someone told me Chicago has 2 seasons: winter and 4th of July

Some people just don't like it, me and the wife went together she hated it and I loved it.
If you're still there make some time to visit Oak Park in the suburbs, it's where Frank Lloyd Wright became Frank Lloyd Wright. His house and original studio and about a dozen houses he designed all in walking distance from his house.

90 days of decent weather. The rest of the year is miserable.

I was there with friends a few weeks ago. I wish it closed at 9pm or I wouldn't have felt like shite for 2 whole days after I got back.

My buddy has a place here. Lucky bastard married a doctor who has rich parents who bought them what has to be a million dollar apartment. He's a sports (college coaches) agent. I'm pretty jealous.
