Some 1.42 million Audi vehicles with so-called EU5 engines are affected in Western Europe, with 577,000 in Germany and almost 13,000 in the United States, a spokesman added.

Audi said 2.1 million cars worldwide were fitted with the software that allowed parent Volkswagen to cheat US emission tests.

Some 1.42 million Audi vehicles with so-called EU5 engines are affected in Western Europe, with 577,000 in Germany and almost 13,000 in the United States, a spokesman for Ingolstadt-based Audi added today.

Affected model lines include the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5, the spokesman said.

Former Porshe boss Matthias Mueller has been employed to deal with the aftermath of the "cheat switch" revelations.

VW owns Audi, so this is really not a surprise.

It's only the beginning. VW is surely not the only on doing this.

They aren't. The EPA is about to wreck shop on any foreign company producing diesels for the U.S. market.

The EPA hates diesels for some unknown reason. I guess it's because it actually makes sense to use them. EPA likes things to be as net-negative as possible

Bosch has their ducks in a row.

They manufactured the cheat switch box but specifically warned VW not to use it in cheat mode for emissions testing.

Somebody's glad they kept that email.

I still haven't heard anything about what Volkswagen plans to do about current owners.

Interwebz talk is because GM is trying to get in the diesel market.

As a scientist, I have worked on and for some diesel emissions products and testing assignments at the state level. You wouldn't believe how ridiculously flawed some of the approved materials are at the state level. It is almost as if someone was getting money under the table or something. Maybe the EPA recognizes this and is trying to set standards that are actually real.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. Government Motors is pissed because diesel Cruze sales are somewhere around zero while Volkswagen continues to have 100% market share on diesel car sales. Calls EPA and asks how they can humble those pesky Germans. EPA says "don't worry government motors, we got this shite"

It's not that far fetched to imagine. I think it's more of the EPA being clueless and a disaster of an organization.

This is almost a compliment to them.

I don't think they understand how engines work.

I'm confident that the reason Volkswagen failed is because EPA did a piss poor job of writing the standard and Volkswagen technically complied with it, and the EPA realized they fricked up and decided to change the interpretation of their fricked up rule. I've seen that happen before.

In my experience, cheating has been rampant over the years.

I've seen firsthand that companies introduce substances into their testing materials at testing labs in order to generate better emissions results.

I hope that the EPA does due diligence on this and takes a serious look at some of the state testing that goes on.

VW is a very cash rich company. If the government fine on VW is igher than GM or Toyota, whose vehicles resulted in deaths, then it's an obvious cash grab. I'm not defending VW though.

The Audi TT came with a diesel or does this cover more than just diesels?

TT EU5 engine

quote:

EU5 European Union Five (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom)

quote:

The company says only diesel models have the software fitted: including the Audi A1 and A3, with the Eu5 1.6 TDI engine, and the Audi A4, A5, A6, Audi TT, Q3 and Q5 models, with the 2.0 TDI engine.

I still don't understand the liability that is being cited for vehicles that aren't sold in the US. The liability and associated fines should be limited to those models sold in the U.S., right?

IIRC the EU has similar restrictions. Cheating in either place breaks the law and results in fines or worse.

Someone is probably going to prison. VW is busy figuring out who right now. I pity every pissant mid-level emissions engineer in their organization right now. I hope some folks have been dutifully deleting their email boxes on the reg.
