This is crazy.
I hate any idea of shady business practices. I would never pay a band in cash beforehand. That is not a good practice for anyone. If you don't accept checks written to your band name I would be worried...

Any "business" who suggests that cash is preferred is suggesting to me that the price negotiation process is not finished.
