If BR would stop bussing kids around town and bring back real neighborhood schools then I would have more faith in the system. Before the court order lee high was a very legit public school.

I'm super curious to see what the new lee high is gonna turn out to be like.

In the end, it will always depend on the specific teacher and school, but in general, you can be pretty sure that Montessori > Episcopal > Catholic > Public.
This is just nonsense, not only because of the generalizations and complete lack of evidence, but the underlying constructivistic theory that is a major part of Montessori education is not well supported empirically compared to other methods.

Then I had it confused with Franklin. My apology
Not a big deal.

Anyways, I just don't think the underlying issue though is the curriculum or quality of instruction, it is the demographics of the students and their families. Switch teachers from a low performing, low-SES school with a high performing, high-SES school, and I don't think we would see much difference in the performance.

I did public school, and ,Montessori once, it was fun at dufroq.

My little bro-in-law is getting lined up to go to BRMHS. He's going to Sherwood middle magnet next year.

I told him, "I hope you like to do a lot of homework". Lol

It will depend on where you live. In Jefferson and Orleans Parish, the advanced study public schools are better than Catholic as far as academics. If you can get your kid/s into these schools, great, if not, private is the way to go. Like another poster stated, the Montessori preschools and such, are very good.

How does a school like Benjamin Franklin High School compare to a Brother Martin?

Really? Where I live here in Nashville area, my public school is Ravenwood and it is absolutely unreal. Where as the catholic school can be seen as more troubled kids

Catholics the winner and it's not close. If I had to I'd work 3 jobs just to pay for it.

I do not have kids yet and grew up on the Northshore so I really don't know anything about public schools in Nola. I do know that Ben Franklin is always rated very high nationally though. I found this tidbit on wiki which is pretty hilarious. How can test scores possibly be racist?
quote:

Accusations of bias in admissions The school's selective admissions policies have led to accusations of bias.[42] Before Hurricane Katrina, it was estimated that 450 of 800 applicants on average were not accepted because of insufficient grades and test scores.[96] Compared to the rest of the city, the school has a disproportionately low percentage of African Americans.[97] Carl Galmon, a local activist, claimed in 1996 that Franklin's admissions tests are culturally biased against black students.[98] Following Katrina, the school converted to a charter school and preserved its selective admissions system.[6][28] The school has received praise for traditionally producing some of the "highest-performing students in the entire state of Louisiana,"[23] including an exceptional number of students awarded by the National Achievement Scholarship Program of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a program open only to African Americans.[10][edit]

Ben franklin is a phenomenal school. It really comes down to the type of kid you have if you are choosing between a Catholic school or Franklin. Here is a post I had where the Franklin residents agreed with me

quote:

I see BF as some heady music, slow talking, dope smoking, jam band people

Catholic kids are more of a bud light, sports rule, frat kid type

Both party together and enjoy each others company, but at the root are slightly different
That was how I perveived the differences in the type of students from a college perspective

There's way more to a school than academics, I like that my kids are still getting religion in school, the class size along with teachers that really care about the students(my kid's teacher comes to his tball games on the weekends), networking with other kids from same social class, discipline, other parents that I can relate too....list keeps going

Question ? Do private schools in BR ( catholic or other) offer scholarships or financial aid ? And what if you're not Christian and non white ?

And Yellowfin , you have a good point . I didn't like the people I had to go to school with in brh . I prolly would've liked catholic better ( sports , hanging out, drinking , white girls , fun ) .

Look man Im with you. Catholic school my whole life, south La, my whole family etc etc. What you want here would be Ravenwood/Brentwood high and not Father ryan. I think you should avoid blanket statements before moving around. It is the same thing as people from out of Louisiana saying private school kids are all filthy rich spoiled kids

The non-Christian thing probably isn't a big deal but I know at St Pauls you had a much better chance of getting a scholarship if you were non white.
