My wife has a small SUV with two car seats in the back. We might be having to help keep a friends kid 3-4 weeks while the parents deal with some issues out of town so we need a third car seat but in worried how it'll fit. The parents offered to pay for slim car seats to fit three across but I don't know much about them.

Anyone have experience with these things or recommend a certain type.

The parents are going to dump their kid off on you for a month?

What kind of issue would require that?

Yes, we managed to fit three car seats across in my wife's CRV. We tried a bunch of combinations and the only one that worked was with Diono car seats. They are quality car seats, but not cheap. I think we got the Radian R120 seats.

Their kid is 3. They don't have many options and we are the only people who have kids so we offered. It's kinda messed up so I wanna help.

Maybe they could just pay for a rental vehicle that has a third row or wider base.

The parents aren't coming back. Congrats on your unwilling adoption of another child.

But seriously, who leaves their kid with an OTer for 3-4 weeks. I am genuinely curious what they will be doing for that long out of town that forces them to leave their child. Please do tell.

If you're doing 3 across you will HAVE to use seat belts to secure the seats in the car. Not that that's a bad thing, but for some reason people like to use the LATCH system and they usually only go with the two outer seating positions. Also you typically cannot hook two car seats together on the same lower anchor connections (typically but your owners manual will tell you). If/when you get the seats you can go to several different places to verify installations. ie a firehouse, a local LSP troop and some hospitals as well. They will help you install the seats and make sure they are safe and legal. Just some FYI. Hate to have a crash and something happen to the kids bc you were throwing it all together.

This or just squeeze them in. Even small SUVs can fit 3 car seats in the back.

This. Diono is the only brand we ever found that was slim enough for 3

The mom is having some health problems that she has to travel to get handled. They told her to stay there for a month. The dad is going with her to help out. Since he will be at the hospital mostly they really didn't know what to do with their kid who is best friends with our son. My wife and her were talking and guilt set in. Then I came across as the dick who asked how we were supposed to haul 3 kids around. I also suggested a rental car but they same to think a slim car seat will fit. It sucks for them so we are just trying to help and the realization of the car seat dilemma slipped by everyone but me and we have 4 days to figure it out.

As you all know, Im not opposed to tying someone on the roof. Aunt Edna had it coming though.
