Car Key Problems - need help from the OT experts/ UPDATE: solved
Posted by SwaggerCopter on 1/12/15 at 2:07 pm01
I just replaced my old key because it wasn't turning in the ignition well. It was super worn down after years, so I had the dealership give me a new one using my VIN number. This key doesn't turn at all in the ignition. Do I need to clean the ignition? Sand the key? This is extremely frustrating.

possibly the ignition switch was changed at one time/
Spray some graphite spray into the key hole. I would not sand down the key.

Does it have a chip, and if so, did they program it correctly? If no chip, softening the edges usually works

Get a steel brush and rub it on the key a few times then try

I had a French teacher in the 8th grade named Madam Cargill. I started calling her My Damn Car key to get some laughs out the fellas. Some nerd ratted me out though and I had to go to the principle and tell him what I called her. I got 2 licks over the deal. Good times.

Sippin on coke and rum, I'm like cold-watered drunk. It's the freakin weekend, so let's get out and have some fun..................

Only put graphite powder in a lock, nothing wet like WD40. Also too much graphite powder can keep the cylinder from turning in the ignition. Wet stuff will collect dirt and dust and make it worse very quickly

I think this is going to be the answer. I don't currently own graphite spray. According to google, I can just slide some pencil graphite into the ignition and mash it up with the key. Good or bad idea?

2003 toyota. Still in great shape somehow. The difference between the key I had and the key I was using is terrifying though.

walmart, home depot all kinds of stores have it, but pencil graphite will not hurt anything.

With my current key situation, I am thinking every time I get the ignition to turn is my last, so I am having trouble envisioning a trip to the store and back (that's two times).

I was told by a locksmith once to never use graphite, that it just messes it up

The dealership will only say the ignition needs to be replaced. $$$

Graphite did the trick.
