Can you imagine seeing Robert E Lee and the Grays marching by your lot in the early 1860s?

The sense of pride would have made you want to suit up and fight in the War of Northern Agression.

Southern men the thunders mutter!
Northern flags in South winds flutter!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Send them back your fierce defiance!
Stamp upon the cursed alliance!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Few lyrics give me boosebumps like, "Like my father before me, I will work the land. And like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand. He was just 18, proud and brave, but a Yankee a'laid him in his grave. And I swear by the mud below my feet, you can't raise a'Cain back up when you're in defeat."

It's sort of a non-sequitur, but I think it basically means "no hell to be raised when you got your arse kicked"

From this day on I own my father's gun

We dug his shallow grave beneath the sun

I laid his broken body down below the southern land

It wouldn't do to bury him where any Yankee stands

I'll take my horse and I'll ride the Northern plain

To wear the color of the Grays and join the fight again

I'll not rest until I know the cause is fought and won

From this day on until I die I'll wear my father's gun

Had they crossed my land, they would have been offered quarter and refreshment.

Had any Yankee crossed besides the burning POS, they would have been offered the same.

I think if you knew my background, it wouldn't exactly be a surprise. It is what it is. It's like my attachment to Alabama football - nonsensical, irrational, but a formative and integral part of the identity that was cultivated for me.

Yes
But a lot of farmers back then did not like seeing either side come by. Both sides took what they wated.
Some southern communities did not support the grey as well. Pearlington Mississippi was one community that sisded more wiht the Union.
