Can the ticket checkers scan your phone or do you have to print them out?

I think you need to print a photo of you phone with the ticket on the screen and then bring that to them to scan.

Guy ahead of me last night used his phone and the lady scanned it.

Yes. But make sure your display is at max brightness and not on auto.
