Buying large appliances online? Negotiating locally?

Has anyone purchased large appliances (refrigerator, dishwasher, etc) online? Where did you buy and how was the experience?

I am about to embark on a kitchen rebuild and have budgeted $15 to $20k for new appliances. I got two quotes locally and both places (Appliance Distributors and Stanton's) came back with straight MSRP on the quotes. It seems like a better deal than MSRP would be possible.

Alternatively, has anyone bought from either of those places and negotiated?

TIA

We used to be able to negotiate with local stores but at that point you're negotiating their margin. Today, you can find what you want at near wholesale prices if you search online. Big box stores will price match online generally.

I bought all our Bosch stuff online. Fast and easy, spent about 20K or so. Goedekers

Not including the refrigerator, that was local...

I have bought from both Appliance Distributors and Stanton's (they completely outfitted 3 houses for me). With that size budget, they will negotiate but right now, they may not know how serious you are and when you are ready to buy.

What is important is to let them guide you through specials that the manufacturers may be running at the time. For example, you may get a free hood system if you buy the range or you may get certain rebates if you get the same brand fridge as the dishwasher, etc.

Personally, I would go local because when something breaks AP or Stanton's will be quicker to respond.

If you want to kick some tires and shop, you can try Notoco as well.

The choices where I live are very limited. Basically it's Lowe's. So that's where I went and they discounted them greatly. $400 off MSRP and then another 15% because I am ex military and used the Lowe's credit card. Then I went to customer service to pay off my balance to avoid paying interest. Suckers.

I purchased a ton of stuff for my new house in 2008 from US Appliances. Everything was very smooth...

Most appliance manufacturers have gone to MSP(minimum sale price) pricing. You should see quotes very similar in price from dealer to dealer. The key is to find a few products that aren't MSP and bargain heavily on those products. Keep in mind these companies are working on slim margins. The margins are a little healthier on the higher end stuff but they are still not great. They also have high inbound freight and delivery cost.

I know for a fact they are working around 15-20% on the everyday brands and 18-25 on the high end brands. They are some products that will allow higher margins but not very many. I was in the industry and dealt on both the sales and purchasing side of things

I remodeled my kitchen six years ago and considered buying online, but when it came down to it I bought everything from Stanton's. Bought everything during the tax fee weekend and saved several hundred dollars. Had a couple of issues early on and they are very good and warrantying appliances purchased from them.

I think I just missed the tax free weekend too. $1,300 down the drain. Thanks there JBE for that 10% tax hike.

Sorry you missed the tax holiday.

I thought about that when I made my post. We bought all the appliances and had them delivered and stored them until they were ready to go in. Of course this was fairly easy for me because I did the whole remodel myself and installed appliances as I completed the cabinets. Worked well for us because we could do a "design build on our terms". Good luck with your remodel!

I'm pretty sure that's only for purchases under $2500.

It's up to 2500$ and its state tax only. So you are looking at saving about 150$. People freak out and don't realize it's not that big of a deal. Some places like Stine's will eat the local tax and save you a little more.

Markup on those items aren't that great. You're not going to see a lot of difference in pricing for like items. If you do, might start worrying what's wrong with it.

You can catch a good spiff. Like buy two items get a third free or buy a range get a free dishwasher. These are common practices for the mid to high end brands. Older models do not fall under any pricing restrictions so you may be able to work a deal on some older models. Think about service when buying online. A lot of companies only service what they sell these days.
