Desert Music: Burning Man Confronts The Rising Beat - NPR Article

quote:

"We do not expect to hear a DJ exhorting a crowd in a way that might work at spring break in Daytona Beach," went a post on the official Burning Man blog the following day. "But it doesn't work on the playa. At all. We admit that we were waiting for the Man to fall last night so we could escape the sound. Yes, yes, we know the saying, 'If it's too loud, you're too old,' and maybe that's true." The pounding rhythms of dance music united under the EDM banner, it seems, have the power of turning cultural progressives a little bit more conservative.

i mean we're talking about these people

quote:

This year's Burning Man remains an endless array of creative thought, art installations and open-minded self-registered events — everything from a Beekeepers Summit, a Female Ejaculation Workshop and a lecture by the Electronic Frontier Foundation's John Gilmore to the Warm Celestial Hug Center, a Magic Pancake Workshop and a Spank Bank. (Draw your own conclusions!)

doing what they can to limit music they don't agree with

quote:

But not everyone recognizes the need to understand the musical context. Last year an art-car-cum-dance-music-camp called Robot Heart became notorious for what may very well have been an apocryphal event, when Skrillex and Diplo ended their tag-teaming Jack Ü DJ set with a mainstream pop-rap track ("Turn Down the for What" by DJ Snake and Lil Jon), allegedly eliciting boos from the audience.

i remember that and laughing my arse off at the hypocrisy. it seems that they're doubling-down on the same sentiments

Sad, all around. My favorite memory of Burning Man is when Dangle and Jonesy went on their sting operation.

when you go read the 10 principles of Burning Man, this is #1

quote:

1. Radical Inclusion

Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

except the prerequisite if you're playing EDM. then you're not welcome and you will not be respected.

quote:

5. Radical Self-Expression

Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.

except if you play EDM, and then we can judge your expressive content and it is not a gift to anyone (at least anyone welcome here)

They've become commercial so it shouldn't be surprising that some of the music has.

They've had Edm music there for awhile. Some friends have been going for about 10 years and they had people like Carl Cox playing there from the first year they went.

This reminds me of the SouthPark bit where the 'non-conformist' wouldn't let anyone join their group unless they dressed and acted just like them.

yeah like 20+ years

it's only an issue now because it's mainstream and that's just not acceptable at BM

there is a doc on the history of burning man on netflix. a year or 2 ago they did online ticket sales and longtime participants didn't make the cut and sent emotional emails and the organizers were crying over it

there was also a major conflict with super rich californians basically setting up these amazing setups, which conflicted with the basics of the festival "heart" as well as aesthetics. i believe they let it go because the same rich act as patrons for many of the artists who present their works at BM

and then they showed the organizers area, which was a nice as the rich people area. such hypocrisy

Doesn't mean radical acceptance, and a lot of people think of it that way. I've read article after article about how inclusion doesn't mean you have to like someone or even talk to them.

EDM
I've never minded it, but you will be hearing that shite in your sleep for weeks after you get back.

What, no Jiffy Lube this year? frick.

And "it's gone commercial" has been a running joke for 20 years. There are strict anti-vending, anti-advertising rules that prevent this from happening.

We had a awesome show blasting gospel music a few years ago there. Several converts gave up drugs and hedonism that week.

Wow, the poster child festival for self expression and artistic singularity really just said that? I've never been, although I always wanted to, but this is a disappointment. The EDM part of it would be the main reason I went. Guess I can mark Burning Man off my bucket list then...... wait did you say female ejaculation workshop?

So who wants to go next year?

Not knocking it at all. But Burning Man will never be something I look back on and think "man I wish I coulda done did that once or twice".

And I love orgies, EDM, crazy shite in general. Just in case you don't know me here.
