WALLINGFORD, CT (WTIC/CNN) - A bullied high school student graduated alone.
Before the ceremony, MacKenzie Torcello had had private tutoring her senior year to avoid going to class. The school system provided the tutoring at the local library.
She didn't even want to graduate with her classmates at Lyman Hall High School. So the school organized a special ceremony just for her.
"The bullying, the making fun of, the name calling, the just ... I didn't feel comfortable being near them," she said.
She said her peers made her feel terrible and worthless.
She did not attend the prom.
Her mother, Priscilla Torcello, said that "her teachers were there. her counselors were there. it was a really, it was just really a great day."
The new graduate said she liked the ceremony.
"I felt special, like, you know, they did it,” she said. “They went out of their way just to do it for me."
The mother says she hopes her daughter's story will empower others battling bullying.
"Speak up," she said. "Make sure you're heard."
Mackenzie says that she wants to pursue a future in still photography.

Not sure how I feel about this.
On one hand bullying sucks and can really affect kids.
On the other hand are we going to cater to every kid that gets their feelings hurt?
This must've been some serious bullying.

Hope it never happens to one of your kids. Kids can be some cruel arse people to other kids. Especially young girls. That's some brutal stuff these kids have to endure at times . Easy to dismiss it , if you don't witness it.

What a bunch of bullshite. I hate bullying but bullying, in moderation, forces people to develop character but she chose to completely avoid having to deal with it. This kid is going to have a tough life ahead of her.

Holy hell, is that the "victim?"
I would love to hear what the kids were calling it.

And youre an adult commenting on a child ...I imagine her peers were probably worse than that. Daily. Constantly.
But by all means, degrade the child.

Stories like this break my heart. How an innocent kid like that gets bullied by such terrible kids for no reason at all, and they feel depressed and worthless because of it. I wish bullying would just go away and that everybody can get along. If only it were that easy. I wish nothing but the best for MacKenzie. She seems like a good kid.

I don't know
She looks better than half the female posters around here

I personally think it's great that they did that for her. But she should have been strong enough to be able walk across the stage with her "bulliers" in attendance.

Horrible. Shame on her classmates.

So instead of addressing the issue they provided her with tutoring and a special graduation? This poor kid has no chance at life. The school and family are doing more damage from sheltering the kid and pretty much condoning the bully behavior.

What a bullshite story and waste of public funds.

Sounds like the bullies won.

I'd hold off jumping her straight off jump. Teenage kids can be overwhelmingly brutal. IF, IF they really drove this girl to have so much fear and social anxiety that she is truly afraid of going to school, the administration should have stepped in long before it got to that point.
There is as equally a chance of her mother over coddling her.
In either senerio if the kid doesn't get counseling, she is going to be a mentally crippled adult.
