Bomb threat at the JCC

The Jewish Community Center on St. Charles Avenue was being evacuated Thursday morning (Feb. 23) following a bomb threat, according to the New Orleans Police Department. No more information is available as the investigation is ongoing, police said.

Lindsay Friedmann, education director for the Anti-Defamation League's south central regional office, said that to their knowledge this is the first threat made against a religious institution in Louisiana this year.

"It's deeply disturbing and it's really frustrating that this continues to happen," Friedmann said. "It's a call to continue to stand up and speak out against these instances and these anti-Semitic threats to our community."

The threat made against the New Orleans Jewish Community Center follows a wave of bomb threats nationwide. As of Feb. 20, there were 68 incidents at 53 Jewish community centers in 26 states and one Canadian province, according to the JCC Association of North America. All of the threats turned out to be hoaxes, the organization said.
