Part 5 of 8

I may add a few more, but this is the end people focused history. I think the next 3 threads will focus more on events.

Speaking of events, it is really disheartening to see such a strong history tarnished by people being upset over food.

For what it is worth, I love fried chicken, cornbread, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie, collard greens, carrots, red beans and rice and all sorts of traditional Southern foods. Now onto history.

Pullman Porters- the uniformed African-American train worker, who forged his way into the middle class.

Rodney Maxwell Davis- Medal of Honor United States Marine (a true hero).

quote:

Ordered to the Republic of Vietnam in August 1967, he was assigned duty as a Platoon Guide with Company B, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division. On September 6, 1967, he was operating with his unit in the Qu?ng Nam Province on a search and clear mission during Operation Swift, when they were attacked by a large North Vietnamese force. Elements of the platoon were pinned down in a trench line by mortars, heavy automatic and small arms fire. He went from man to man encouraging them on and also returning fire at the same time. An enemy hand grenade fell in the trenches his men were fighting from and without hesitation he threw himself upon the grenade. He saved his fellow Marines in this selfless act and thus earned the nation's highest military decoration: the Medal of Honor.

I don't even know if I have the guts to fall on a Grenade knowing I have a family at home. A Well deserved medal. I hope the family was taken care of afterwards.

I thinks its important to look at Blacks who follow different perspectives. Right wings Blacks are typically shunned, but they bring a unique perspective.

Personally, think that they just want Blacks to fully utilize their new freedoms to become self sufficient rather than using them as a means to create safety nets.

Some would argue they are even more pro-black...that'd shock some conservatives.

There is an interesting parallel with the river pilots of the lower Mississippi - the Pullman Porters evolved into a broader category of train workers and the slots were so coveted they almost became hereditary at times - or certainly you had to be "in" with those families, if not a member or married in.
