Any avid bikers out there?

I do around 350 miles a month.Ive had an avg Relight 3.5 2014 bike. Now I'm looking at something better.

I'm looking at the Giant defy 2016

Pretty sure that Surly is a steel frame. No thanks.

Go with the Giant aluminum frame if your dead set on one of these two. Make sure you ride it first though.

Exactly
Light is better
The surely is more expensive (around 1800$) vs 1200$ for the other one.

Giant should be a little more comfortable for everyday riding with the more relaxed frame style.

Hell if you're willing to spend around 1800 I'd go with the Giant TCR Advanced 2 for 2000.

Full 105 groupset and carbon frame. Once you go carbon you'll be happy.

I'm always so scared of cracking my frame on the shitty Baton Rouge roads.

that's not Giants fault.

I ride Trek and will until they fail me.

for your usage, get the Giant

that Pacer is designed for touring, not weekend warrior type riding

I don't pay much attention to that. The ride weight of my bike is like 225, so the maximum stress weight is probably more than double that. Just don't go off 8" curbs.

Yeah I know it probably won't happen. Just always in the back of my mind when I hit an unexpected pothole

i have 12 bikes (yeah shut up) including carbon mtn bikes that suffer waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more abuse than a pothole so i think you're overly worried about nothing.

I wouldn't worry about cracking a frame due to roads. Your arse wouldn't be able to handle roads that are rough enough to crack the frame from normal use. Unless you are well above the weight limits, the only time I'd worry about damaging the bike is from a crash (which the bike is last thing on my mind in that instance).

And for 1800 bucks, I'd want at least 105 components. That's a lot to spend for a steel bike though. I think you can definitely get a carbon bike with those components in that range. I paid $1999 for my tri bike with dura ace mix components. I know you can find a road bike somewhere for a good deal in that range with top of the line components if you're willing to shop.
