I will be riding a mountain bike I bought for trail riding and kind of fell into road biking as well. Really don't have the extra money to throw on a road bike so I'll make it work. Thanks to everyone for all the advice.

I did the entire Natchez Trace unsupported in four days. Carried my gear and a bit of food, mostly bought stuff along the way.

The takeaway: frick camping.

Thirty miles in a day in the Alex area (relatively flat) is a piece of cake unless you are morbidly obese or have no gumption.

Relax, train in the next two months and pedal on, Garth.

Here's another piece of advice that has worked for me: maintain a relationship with your bike shop.

They know a lot more about bikes than you do, which means they can nickel and dime the shite out of you if they really want to, so make them not want to do that. Buy your bike from them, and buy an accessory or two. Come back in every so often and buy something cheap that you don't really need. A spare bell, a mirror, etc...

Do that regularly, and that turns them human. It'll save you a good deal of money in the long run. Next time you need a new bike or even a standard tune-up, they'll be nice to their loyal customer.

Tour De Bayou?

I'll be there doing the 102.

Did it the last couple years. It's a well managed event, so at the absolute most you'll need a cliffbar. They have bananas, orange slices, pickles and other snacks for you at break points, which are every 10-13 miles typically. Water fill stations there too. You'll enjoy yourself.

Surprisingly, this route manages to find the biggest fricking hills in all of central Louisiana and man I hate elevation.

When going up in elevation or fighting against a beast of a head/crosswind, just remember...

I got a lot of good feedback in this thread a few weeks back: LINK. I haven't made it to a bicycle shop yet, but I plan to next month when I take a week off of work.
