Best Way to Travel LA to New York?

I have a couple of friends from Europe who want to fly in to Los Angeles and fly out of New York 3 or 4 weeks later. They asked me what the best way is to do that and I have no idea. They are only 20 so I would guess renting a car would be an issue.

Anybody have any experience with this? Greyhound busses? Or is flying the only thing that's realistic?

Get a group together and go by covered wagon. Great views and all the buffalo and red people you can shoot.

If they have the time, a cross-country train trip would be the way to go. Europeans are already used to train travel, but our country is just, on the whole, much more beautiful and scenic than Europe (Italy and Austria, notwithstanding).

Amtrak can be costly though. I would assume buses are going to be the best option financially. If they've got money to burn, I'd do Amtrak. I hope to do it someday.

What's their budget? That's the determining factor.

No, at 20 they will not be able to rent a car. So if they can afford to hop on flights and make their way across the country, that's the way to do it.

Train rides are really expensive and that trip would probably be three days. I bet the ticket for a one way would be at least $300. I would spend the extra money to get a flight

I assume they are making stops all along the way if they have 3-4 weeks. Amtrak is as expensive, or more than flights sometimes and the schedules are not always convenient.

I looked for a trip the other day (don't remember where to) and there were multiple 7+ hour layovers to change trains. I thought it would be a good idea travelling with an infant (get a bedroom suite). Just take our time getting there and enjoy the experience without taking a 6 month old on a plane. But timing, layovers, etc just weren't worth it. And with the amount of time it took, I was not just going to be in a seat. I would need the bedroom.

Amtrak from San Francisco to Chicago (California Zephyr) is an awesome ride. They could board in LA and continue on to NY via Chicago. Tell them to get a sleeping car and BYOB. The Rocky Mountains, Continental Divide and formations in Utah are all amazing via rail.

I either take Jetblue out of MSY to JFK, or go Delta to LGA. I find the JFK cab ride a bit more of a pain, although it's a nicer flight experience.

This is LA not L.A.
