I don't do cold weather.
Too many weirdos and general overcrowding in California, which is a shame because it's a great state otherwise.
I'll go with Texas

Louisiana
-Exciting political landscape
-Mystique of NOLA
-You can get pretty almost anywhere in the State without having to drive through Monroe

Pennsylvania. Has everything you can ask for in the United States.
Mountains
Two big cities (one with Colonial-Northeast identity, one with a more Midwest identity)
Rivers
Hunting
Access to great lakes
Philadelphia is a close second to NYC in the Arts
Great sports teams, and an actual college football program (puts us over NY)
Well-balanced government: not too liberal but not conservative to the point of obstinance

California by a longshot. It has mountains, beaches and national parks. It has great weather. It has a solid, diversified economy that is not dependent on any one industry. It has fantastic infrastructure and two (three?) world-class cities that are nothing alike.
On the downside, the politicians are famously bad and it is increasingly expensive.

New Hampshire, Virginia or Oregon.

Western Pennsylvania (aside from Pittsburgh) is terrible. Shitty roads, weird ugly people, it's way too hard to purchase alcohol, food is subpar, etc.
Pittsburgh is pretty cool though. I've never made it over to the eastern part of the state, so I can't comment there.

Also know quite a few beautiful women up that way

5 pages and 5 people picked Louisiana. Typically, only morons think this is a great state, but that one poster (you know who he is based on his response) seems to have his head on straight. You can tell the others haven't lived elsewhere except for maybe MS. I'm only in this state because of family.

Best state for me to live is Louisiana - all my family and friends live here

Not flaming yf, but honestly, if your family & friends were all in (for example) Oklahoma, would you probably feel the same way about that state? Or, put differently, is it the people and relationships you know and have in a place that make you satisfied to be in that place? I understand that concept if you feel that way, I just don't know if I could do an extreme version of that premise like Iowa or Scranton, PA.

For sure, especially if I grew up there. I'm fortunate to be able to travel a lot so I get to experience a lot of different places and still live near people I care about
I may move when I'm done working or when my kids are out of the house but for now I'm happy where I'm at
Eastern Oklahoma is beautiful too. I'll be in central Oklahoma next week blasting mallards.

I just picked OK at random but I get your point. I travel a bunch too and while I really like some of the places I see when travelling, I don't want to move to them. I'm pretty well networked and anchored where I am, family, friends and work.
If I were an orphan with amnesia with a trust fund, Monterrey area (Carmel-ish) or Asheville or Logan, UT or the Big Island, HI, or some combination of them.

New York because it is where New York City is located

If you can afford it and have family, Williamson County, TN.
No state income tax
Southwest Airline Hub
4 seasons but zone 4 and still lives like south/geographically attractive as well
Incredible schools
No crime/family oriented
All amenities you could want

I don't know where I'd move if I decided to after retiring. It probably wouldn't be at state though
Posted on 12/1/15 at 7:07 am to yellowfin
Some folks follow their kids in retirement. I will not be amongst that number.
I'll probably stay around here.

NC, Mountain biking is amazing there. Would consider parts of TN, just don't know of the better parts. Currently in FL, its pretty good, just not a beach person. Plus too many sharks on the Atlantic side.
