What are some great reads on the internet that for the most part are true?
Here is one that is on survivalistboards.com, which is about outdoor activities. It has 250+ pages, going several years running:
Creepy stories from the outdoors
Sure some of these may be lies and over dramatized but I think there are a lot of common themes that leave you questioning what is out there. I've been reading this for about a week now off and on.
So what are some other good finds like this? I also saw mentioned somewhere about a nurse message board with a similar topic but in hospitals and such.

Here is a creeper:
I was in Juneau, Alaska once traveling on business. After work, I decided to drive North out of town and I was stopping randomly at different beaches. I stopped at one and was having a great time on the beach by myself watching the birds fishing and looking at the tidal pools. A truck pulled up in the parking lot above me, and I didn't think much of it...the first time. The truck spun a brodie and left, heading North.
I wandered further down the beach, and a few minutes later the truck came back. It parked at the overlook for a bit (the beach was probably 50 feet lower in elevation than the parking lot, there was a bluff) and just sat there...then it peeled out again and headed off to the south. I was a bit creeped out, and about this time I started making my way back to the trail to go back to my car. Right about then, the truck comes back. It parked with it's headlights shining right towards me (it was getting to be dusk) and just sat there. Then it peeled out...but I could hear that it stopped...right where my car was parked. I heard the engine shut down on the truck.
Right then every instinct in me said, "Hide." I left the beach and went straight into the woods, and somewhat up the hill. Juneau has big trees and I found one that had been knocked down and I lay down on the far side of it. I was wearing a bright blue jacket and knew even in the fading light I stuck out like a sore thumb. My cell phone had a poor connection, and I wasn't armed because I can't carry any weapons when I travel by airplane. I was scared spitless at this point.
Then I hear, "Slam. Slam." and I know that there are at least two people. They had waited a while, I guess, maybe to see if I was coming up the trail. Now they started down the trail, and one of the men appeared to have a long object. I think it was a rifle, but in the fading light it may have been a bat or something else. And he was calling, "Hello....where are you?". All of a sudden I felt very much like I just stepped into "The most dangerous game." I remained hidden, heart beating wildly. I waited until the men were well down onto the beach and then began climbing the hill in the woods up to where I knew the parking lot to be. I tried not to make noise but that was impossible- there were dried leaves and deadfall all over, I was making a heck of a racket. But I guess they never heard me.
I got up to my car and the truck freaked me out- it was fully tinted and there was no way to tell if anyone remained in the vehicle. I started the car and tore out of there. I have hiked alone all my life and been in far more remote places than this was but never before or since have I had such a feeling that I was in grave danger. To this day I don't feel I overreacted- I am sure that those men had something very bad in store for me, had they caught me.

Missing 411
How about free ones? I like the ones from the site I posted because the site isn't really about creepy or paranormal stories. It is about camping and outdoor survival, yet many people around the world have shared their creepy stories in the woods. I guess they are much easier for a skeptic to believe. If the same stories were posted on a paranormal forum about UFO's and bigfoot, many skeptics would blow off the site as a hoax even though they very well may be true.
Plus the missing 411 is not free to read. I would love to hear some stories from it if you have read it.

I would've started NY car and either let the air out or cut at least one of their tires. Even a pebble under a valve cap...

No it's not free but there are plenty of interviews on youtube that the author gives.

This is a great read. Not sure how much of this is true though.

I know it was posted on here before but that one story of the stripper chick who met this crazy white stripper and took a road trip to Florida. A bunch of crazy shite straight out of a movie type stuff happened to them and it was a pretty dang good read. Although if you can find a translated version to proper English, it would be much better.

Here is another gem on the topic of creepy outdoor stories:
quote:
Back in 2006, I was home on leave. My family lives in hills of East KY, and we have alot of land back behind the house. My grandpa, dad, and uncle built a cabin back there in 1990 and over the past 10 years my grandpa built himself a few treestands (pretty much treehouses).
Anyway, I was home on leave, just before deploying to Iraq for the first time. Me, my girlfriend(ex now) and my sister decided we were going to go up to the cabin and camp for the weekend. We decided that we wanted to sleep in tents outside, even though the cabin had bunks. Anyway, we had a fire going and had just got done with dinner and it was about midnight. My girl and I get in our tent and my sister got in hers. Well, we were asleep before ya know it.
I woke up at around 0200 to the sound of someone "trying" to sneak around outside our tent. I couldn't see a shadow or his silhouette because the fire was out, plus, I had a dark tent it's a heavily wooded area for the most part and our cabin was in a small clearing, so not a whole lot of moonlight got in there. I had a weird feeling, much like you all have described, but not that dread feeling. I could clearly tell it was a human because of they way they were walking, like I said, "trying" to sneak around. It was pretty hot and humid that night and I was on top of my sleeping bag and the sheet my girl was wrapped up in...
As I raise up to grab my Glock out of the front pocket of my pack, which was at my feet, I heard what sounded like nylon being sliced. That's when I heard my sister scream, which just boiled my blood. I'm telling you I unzipped the screen on my tent and had my upper body out of that tent in under a second. When I get my head out of the tent and look at my sister's I see a guy, hunched over in front of her tent, looking directly at me. Before I could get a word out this guy was headed for me. My sister's tent was only about 10-12 feet away from me...I could tell something was in his hand but it all happened so fast.
I put two rounds in his chest as he was coming at me, and he hit the ground a few feet in front of me. This all happened really fast guys, I know I've kind of slowed it down a bit but it happened REALLY fast. I was still on my knees when I had shot him, so when he hit the ground I stood up and my training had kicked in. I stood up and was yelling at him, saying "stay on the fu**ing ground". Now when I think back it seems like I stood there yelling that for 20 minutes, but it was only about 10 seconds I think. I grabbed his left arm and extended it above his head and then had to lift him up a bit to get his right arm up. My girl was up by then, freaking out, as was my sister. I didn't even acknowledge them...I immediately started scanning the area with my Surefire and pistol, making sure there were no other people with this dude. After I made sure no one else was with him, which took a max of 1 minute and around 30 feet away from my sister and girl at max, I walked back over to the guy.
He was still laying in the position I put him in, not moving but still breathing. I could tell a round had hit his lung from the way he was breathing. I only had some gauze and medical tape with me so I put him up against the tree beside my tent on his side, the side with the good lung to the ground, because that's how I had been trained to deal with a collapsed lung. I plugged the exit wound up the best I could. After that, I had to pretty much yell at my girlfriend, who could hardly move from fear, to get her to get on the cell and call 911. I checked this dudes pockets and found what I thought was crack, turned out to be meth, and in the other pocket I found a tiny .22 that looked like a fake fun because it was so small.
Anyway, to cut this story short, the State Police got to my grandpa's house within about 20 minutes. He brought the first 2 troopers up on an ATV, the rest came up on a different road, which SUV's we're able to get up. It turns out the guy was high as hell on meth, which explained why he lived for almost an hour after I shot him.
Apparently, this guy was from the area and had been in and out of jail many times for drug and assault charges. We still have no idea to this day why he was that far up in the mountain (about 4 miles), on private property, and without any kind of gear besides a knife and that .22. He didn't even have a shirt on. The "nylon" I heard being sliced was the screen on my sisters tent. He had cut a big enough slice that he could have easily crawled in. We're pretty sure he came up there on the other road and seen us and decided to try to rob us. I don't know how he would've went up there on the road from my family's home, because they have lots a dogs and I know for a fact he wouldn't have been able to get by them.
Now, I think I'm a pretty tough guy. I've deployed three times, once to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan, the first deployment being with a Cavalry unit at Ft. Campbell and the two to AFG with the 75th Ranger Regiment. I've seen plenty of combat, way to much for my liking. But, to this day, this has been the most traumatizing, craziest creepiest experience I have ever had. I think it was because the guy was after my sister, and God knows I would die for her a million times over. She's the most important thing I have, I have no wife, nor kids. But guys, I can't seem to explain through a keyboard how much this kills me to talk about. It really doesn't bother me that the guy died, because he was a direct threat to my sister, rather him than her, anyday. The "what-if's" is what gets me. What if I hadn't woken up at that exact moment? My sister could have woken up right there and he could have killed her...
I don't know, but this is making me want to puke, as it always does when I go into such details. If ya'll have any questions feel free to ask.
After I get back from PT I'll try to find the link to the story from my local news station.
Makes you not want to go out in the woods unless you are packing and even then

To me - "A Good Read" is something that is consistently entertaining. For me that entails variance in subject matter. This manages to do that under the "history" umbrella...

A few years ago there was a thread at (IIRC) the Sports Illustrated forum's golf board that had been going on since 1997.
I believe the SI forum was shut down wasn't it? Anyone know if that thread was continued somewhere else?

What was the thread about on that golf board? I just love reading those just for the fact there are so many different type of people who contribute to it around the country or world. It is what reality TV wishes it could be like.

Well after years of it being quiet I am hearing a horrible crashing sound again between 2 and 3 am. Sounds like big picture falling off water falling on coffee table breaking glass. When I first moved to the house i was asking neighbor about it thinking maybe something outside, when he replied "well that is how it happened." I was dumbfounded and said how what happened. He said that is how he died. I was like who died what the hell are you talking about? He goes on to tell me original owner of the house died of massive heart attack about 3 am and was huge, fell on glass and wood coffee table as he died causing huge crashing sound. Of course no one told me anything about someone dieing in the house. Two people have died here and 5 on the street that has 7 houses total. We hear footsteps, doors open. lights go on and off, stuff gets moved u name it.
Comes and goes, I don't know what he wants now but this crashing shite at 3 am is getting old quick.
