I am interested in doing it for excercise and to be better equipped to defend myself.

Boxing
Kick boxing
Muay Thai
Jiu Jitsu
Etc.

I'm open to any and all ideas. Just wondering what you find is the best fighting style from experience.

I've mastered the art of Talk Shitsu in the background while my friends beat you up.

I would take jiu jitsu, but that's just because I find it to be the most interesting. Krav Maga is probably the most beneficial in terms of practicality.

357 practicing the quick draw.

But seriously; How big a boy are ya? That might factor in to what's best for you as well.

Don't even spend the money on any of that. Just casually mention that you "Train MMA" every time you go up to the bar. Don't even look at anyone when you say it.

I studied "Ka-razy"... it's not nearly as disciplined as Karate, but just as effective.

Boxing. Will keep you in shape if you train enough and you will learn how to throw a proper punch, which most men have no clue how to do. That right there will give you an edge in most street aplications. If you really want to develop good self defense, add BJJ. I say that, because most of those fights with the people who can't punch, end up on the ground.

Closed it's doors for good.

UFC Gym has boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, wrestling, and cardio.

Don't let the name of the gym fool you. It's a great place.

Average size guy, exercise regularly, healthy, but I want to be confident that I can handle myself if shite ever hits the fan

I'm liking the sound of this, but why not just start with BJJ?

This plus a decent ground game because all fights will eventually lead to the ground.

Krav Maga or BJJ I'd say. Krav Maga is a good place to learn how to handle up on someone fast.
