If you're just looking for 2D CAD, check out Draftsight:

https://www.3ds.com/products-services/draftsight-cad-software/free-download/

It's made by the same folks that develop SolidWorks and is more or less a copy of AutoCAD as far as 2D functionality and is offered as a free license.

Used autocad for years and hated every second. Used VectorWorks and fell in love. Never looking back.

Vectorworks looks like it's focused on architectural design, may not be the best fit for someone looking to do mechanical design.

Forgot to say that I have bootcamp on my MacBook Pro with Windows 7 Professional on it.

Autodesk Invetor or Solidworks is better than straight CAD programs for machine design. You can get a evaluation copy of Inventor for free... (or there are sites to download the cracked version).

The thing you want is fusion 360 by autodesk.

It's a 3d modeling program made by the same folks that make autocad. It's not terribly difficult to use.

It's free for hobbyists.

Enjoy.

Fusion
