I posted this on the money board but apparently no one posts there anymore so I am going to try the OT and take my licks for being poor.

I'm specifically looking for one that is great at automatically determining the transaction type based on the transaction description sent to my bank (I realize that I may have to configure somethings - but essentially I want software that automatically reads key words that can then be used to file the transactions - like "%wal-mart%' = groceries.

Also looking for it to be real time. The price of the software doesn't matter. I just want, truly the best functioning and useful option out there (can use of windows pc and iphone)

I use Quicken Deluxe personally. All my accounts are sync automatically on log in. It tracks all my checking savings 401k stocks etc etc etc

Its probably more than what your looking for, but its a good one ever since Microsoft Money died. (still salty)

There is a app for iphone that syncs with all your Quicken cloud data.

I've heard some good things about it but I am not sure it is real time

This is a big part of why America is hopeless.

Does it automatically categorize transactions well?

I've never tried to see if it's real time but it updates by the time I get home from a store

I used it for years... then it started randomly losing transactions from my history and throwing my budgets off. I'd know something was screwed up and it would have just lost 3 days worth of transactions, never to be seen again.

I started using excel to track it all... it's not real-time, but I have a good enough grasp of my finances to not need real-time updates.

I'm actually extremely good with Excel - but I prefer to use Access if I am going to use Office.

Yes, it will. It memorizes how you code stuff that is new to the memory. So your first couple months you gonna have to do some assigning. Otherwise from then on it goes off memory. Depending how much you categorize stuff, you may split stuff at walmart between groceries, personal care, automotive etc.

But for the most part, for just easy spending etc, it does it all

So why not maintain a daily updated database with Access?

I used to use quicken, migrated over to Mint 5 years ago. I love it.

It does a pretty good job categorizing stuff. But easy to make any changes. Screw inputting transactions by hand.
