Heading to DC later this month to do all the touristy things. Looking at hotels and AirBnB. Would anyone advise staying in the Shaw, Logan Circle, or Adams Morgan area near the Metro?

Stay out of AdMo... It's all college kids.
Logan Cir is cool, so is DuPont. You can probably find good places in AirBNB across the river in Arlington.

I usually just catch the metro in Fairfax.

Yea I wasn't sure how it would be staying in Arlington. I guess either way you are jumping on the Metro.

As stated before Adams Morgan will be very loud as it is almost entirely college kids.
Logan Circle would be good, but if you are looking to do all of the touristy stuff, which includes our amazing selection of restaurants and nightlife. I would recommend Federal Triangle area.

Holiday Inn in Alexandria, Va. on Eisenhower. The Metro is practically in the parking lot.

I live in Arlington. The whole area from Ballston to Courthouse (and arguably even to Rosslyn) is one big walking neighborhood. Solid restaurants and bars everywhere, and good public transportation. You are right across the river from DC proper and between Metro and Uber you can get wherever you need to go.
It isn't noisy at night and there is very little crime. I highly recommend getting the DC Metro Transit app so you can get real-time status on trains and buses. And Uber, of course. You can rent bikes from Capital City Bikeshare (and in DC), they have bike stands all over. For $10/day it's a sweet deal.
There are plenty of good places in Alexandria too. That's further out from DC but still quite solid.
ETA: You really don't need a car if you're going to play tourist. The only place I can think of offhand where a car might be helpful is the National Cathedral (which you should see btw) but you can get pretty close if you pick the right bus. If you do stay in Arlington, Clarendon, Ballston and Courthouse will be the sweet spots, in that order.
