BUMP for a Playa Mujeres trip report.
Just returned from 5 days/4 nights at 4 star resort.
No kids allowed - 5 stars.
SERVICE - 5 stars - best people ever!
Room - 2 story Terrace with pool club level. I don't know if the extra for the club was really worth it. Club lounge with bar and snacks is nothing special because you have free booze and snacks already in the room and restocked daily. Absolut Vodka is not top shelf, but it is higher shelf than Smirnoff. The best part about Excellence Club is the location. We started in room 7451. It's a great location directly in the center of the property. If you stay up/out late - it's perfect. If you're ready to call it a night at 10 because you're up for breakfast before 8am, then it's too noisy. Bands, Karoke, etc. until midnightish. Moved to room 8464 the next 2 nights. This has to be the best room on the property. Closer to the beach and overlooks the beach and back half of the resort. Request this room and you won't be disappointed! Be prepared for A LOT OF NUDITY from these roof top rooms. Everyone seems to go with it so a good time is had by all. 5 stars
Beach - it is kind of small and crowded in the private area. Half of the time we stayed on the other side of the beach. More beach chairs and less beds. More topless in the private area. 4 stars.
Pools - stayed here only occasionally. The main pools are big, but the chairs are always taken/saved. Also, it your wife wants to lay here topless it's sort of uncomfortable with the people having lunch overlooking her
Of course for guys, it doesn't get any better than Filet Mignon, lobster, and tits. The private club pools and hot tubs are both warmer and you get more service from the wait staff. 4 stars
The oddest thing to me is the lack of interaction between vacationers here. Easily 80% of the people do nothing but read books or IPads. This includes couples not even talking to each other. We talked and drank the entire time, but there were few others.
Food - this is the tricky part. We ate the buffet for breakfast every morning. Again great service and good selection. The outside lunches pizza oven and grill on the beach were ok for pool/beach food. Dinner - I don't know what to say about this. I'm far from a Louisiana food snob, but the dinners were terrible compared to the level of the resort. Cheap cuts of beef like found at the discount grocery stores. The Italian was Olive Garden level. The Mexican - think Panchos. The room service was the worst! I didn't care so much that it was almost cold when it arrived, but that it was just
I knew we were in trouble when we ate a special Mexican buffet on the first night and sampled almost everything, and the only thing edible were the shrimp fajitas - think local Tex-Mex in your town. You could smell the fish 3 feet away - pass.
2 stars - only because we didn't starve. There's really no excuse for the food to be so sub par, when the rest of the property is perfect.
The vacationers ranged from 30 - 60. A few older - few younger. We're 41 and talked with other 30 somethings. I wasn't expecting spring break by any means, but not a very lively place at all. When the sun went behind the clouds most wrapped up in towels and took naps or went to their rooms.
By 4pm the pool and beach were empty. The older crowd hit the early bird special at 6pm while most hit the numerous bars at 630 and dinner soon there after.
Double check when you pack. You don't want to buy anything from the resort i.e. $32 bottle of sun screen. $50 for a $5 Wal Mart quality belt etc.
We would only go back if traveling with other couples. If not, we will look toward the hotel zone for more of a fun / outgoing place.
