Bereaved Parents

Recently joined this board because my son visited it often. Beautiful young man. Loved his Tigers. Graduated 1st in his chemistry class at LSU, and moved to Austin to earn his Phd in chemistry.
Had, for many years battled alcohol and substance abuse.
Earned many honors, and he always made us proud. Taught me much about forgiveness and tolerance. He was a special person who loved others passionately. Loved his tailgait buddies and LSU in general. Loved Baton Rouge.
He lost his battle about a year and a half ago. Wife and I are devastated. Buried him on my wife's birthday. He was a week shy of his 1st wedding anniversary to a lovely lady he met at LSU.
It makes me laugh to read the OT. I can picture him with the same witty remarks I read here. Thank you for that.
That being said, if you know of a bereaved parent, know that there can be no greater pain than losing what is most precious to you. Be kind to them and accept them as they have become. Let them talk about their child, because that is all they have that remains.
Bereaved parents never can return to normalcy. They develop a new norm. A norm that is sometimes difficult to understand, but protects them from what the past has dealt them, and what the future will bring them.
And to those who have lost friends and siblings...I feel your pain.
Let your life be filled with thoughts of them and memories of a better time.

My condolences your loss. While there generally are some aholes on this board, threads about lost loved ones always bring out the humanity in posters.

I am actually doing well tonight. This board reminds me of him, and I love reading it. Brings a smile to my face, and laughter that i seldom experience.

I am dealing with the reality that I may only have a short amount of time left with a family member. It's tough, man. I can't imagine not getting to say goodbye like it seems you didn't.
To you and yours

If you don't mind sharing, what was your sons username?
I understand if you don't want to.

Praying for peace.
What's the secret for keeping your marriage intact during such a trying time?

Well, he posted here infrequently, but read the board daily.
Actually saw my son the evening he was called home. He had this strong desire to see us. Drove all night from Austin, visited with us a couple of hours. We could see he was distressed that evening. Went out with friends and never saw him again.
Hr drank heavily and took some sleeping pills at a friends house. Never awakened.
He was 27.

I lose track of all the posters we have lost but I remember Coolidge being the first that we really knew about.
Chicken should do something in the username list to pay tribute. Something as simple as highlighting their name somehow would be cool.

Kev, I was at a sulphur elementary school awards ceremony today and this one little girl had your last name and didn't know if it was a relative.

Chin up bud. Life can be unfairly vicious.
