First Saturday with Beale Street cover charge "better than expected"

Many business owners were apprehensive when city leaders first announced a Saturday night cover charge would be established for patrons to gain access to Beale Street.

But after the first weekend where the plan was put into action, some business owners are optimistic. ...

I was there last week...just in time

Paying cover to get on Beale and then pay another cover at Silky's is too much. If I still lived there, I would be spending wayyyy more time on Madison.

Seems wrong to charge a cover to access a public street... but I get what they are going for.

Beale Street is overrated and it is in Memphis. No thanks.

This is basically gentrification...of a public street.

Beale gets rough late at night with a ton of people just standing around the street.

If the cover charge replaces the charge at Silky's then I'm all for it.

could this fix the French quarter or would it just spread the trash out to other sections of the city?

Was wondering if that has been included in all of the crime discussions about Bourbon.

how on earth are they going to block off the entire French Quarter to charge a cover? Bourbon alone would be impossible. Beale is about a third the size of Bourbon if that.

Nope. You have to understand that logistically this could never happen on Bourbon or the French Quarter in general. There are way too many streets that intersect Bourbon and then you have the issue of 3 or 4 hotels who have access to Bourbon.

Bourbon's only hope is continued beefed up security and continuing to gentrify the areas immediately around the quarter, which is happening except for one area house project I believe.

My understanding is it is a $10 cover to get on the street, then you get $7 in credit to use at an establishment.

Something had to be done. If the goal is to get the people away from Beale who were causing trouble and just loitering in the street, this is a good way.

In other settings, I think this is called a "toll."

Because of violence on Beale street and overcrowding. People will clog up people street and not spend a dime and those are the people usually causing the violence on the weekends.

What happened the last time they did this?

I recall either in summer 14 or 15 they did the same thing. I remember because I was there the first or second week they did it and I think there was a thread on here about it.
