As implied - I have a bad back. I've been thinking of investing in an inversion table for a while and figured I'd get some second opinions on here before dropping a few hundred on one.

So what's the OT's opinion on them?

Get one that has the fulcrum at your thighs and not ankles, unless you want your ankles and knees decompressed as well. Also, anything over $300.00 is over priced.

Like Mark Twain says, no need for a huge price tag.

A physical therapist recommended it, and it is the best thing I ever did for my back problems. Avoided surgery, and I'm functioning almost normally these days, with much less daily pain. Do it.

Edit because I'm a piss poor speller.

Strengthen your glutes and midsection.

Try to stay mobile in your hips, glutes, quads, hams.

Try not to sit most of the day.

Will be your best bet for long term relief.

I personally can’t use one. It makes my back worse. Used to use it all the time and it helped. But hurt my lower back and tried. Thought I was gonna die. Tried it again a different time same results. So I don’t use it anymore. Know a lot of people that it helps a lot though.

I like mine. Have 5 fractured disc from a car wreck. Seems like it pulls my spine straight. It's not a cure all but it does offer me some relief.

bad backs
What this means determines what you need to do.

If it's just generic back discomfort, you probably need to strengthen your back muscles. An inversion table may help, but it's not going to solve the problem. The vast majority of people with "bad backs" simply have weak back muscles. There are convenient ways to strengthen back muscles enough to rid yourself of back pain.

I used to have frequent lower back pain. I started strengthen my lower back and haven't had lower back pain since.

They say if you have a slipped disc or whatever it will just make it worse.

A decade+ of nonstop athletics topped off with a pretty bad head on collision left my lower back in shambles (L5 & S1 being the worst). To quote the doc, "you have the lower back of a 50 year old man who's worked hard labor his entire life" (I'm mid twenties ).

Very true. My back pain goes away when I’m diligent about stretching & strengthening my back, hips, & hamstrings.

Jacked my back up about 2 1/2 years ago. Bulging disc in my lower back. Went to BR neuro and they wanted to cut me. I said thanks but no thanks. Saw a TV commercial for the Teeter Inversion Table. They were pricey but i happened to see one of Woot.com a week or two later. Bought it and used it for 6 weeks. i hung upside down for a few minutes at a time, pulled to each side to stretch, and then would flip back up. did that 3-5 times a week. My back has been dang near perfect. No soreness, tightness, pain, etc at all. Coincidence? Who knows. But my back is better off than it was even before i injured it. I think they are worth the couple hundred you pay for them for sure. just MHO
