Baton Rouge really had a challenging 2016

Les Miles being fired paled in comparison to other major headlines in Baton Rouge.
The Alton Sterling shooting ignited a powder keg of racial divide and the protesting really brought the national spotlight on us. In turn, it led to the ambushing and murder of three police officers by a cowardly gunman bent on dividing us further.
The summer couldn't end soon enough, and then the worst was yet to come, the major flood that left 30,000+ homeless or displaced.
Just an unreal year for a city that mostly stays out the spotlight. Hoping 2017 is better!

I've lived here for 25 years, and have never seen anything even close to what happened last summer. If 2017 is worse, then god help us all.

well you got a new Mayor. Time to see how BR is ran, with North BR running things.
Hopefully there are no real serious things like the Alton Sterling incident or flooding though. BR isn't a great city, but it gives a good college try.

That's the best thing that happened to Baton Rouge all year.

Yep I'm definitely glad that whole episode is behind us and we'll never have to hear about it again.

I wish. Wish the DOJ would have completed the investigation prior to the new year. We could have left all that shite in 2016. Afraid there may be another shite show to come.

It's going to get a lot worse with SWB as mayor.

You kidding??? They've known the truth for months now. They're just dragging their arses til' Trump gets in and the blame for their hasty, impulsive bullshite can be on him.

I was going to give SWB the benefit of the doubt until she appointed Denise Marcelle as her public safety advisor. She will be helping to make the decision regarding who are next police chief will be. That is sickening, literally giving the criminals their choice of cop.

BR has had a challenging couple of decades.

The Broome regime will give the stand down orders on the protests given the Alton Sterling results and lots of property is going to be destroyed

Stop complaining and feeling sorry for yourself. That's not the attitude that gutted all those houses after the flood.

I really hope you're wrong but I'm afraid you're probably right. Hopefully after the first scuffle, they'll realize that they handled it right the first time.

Yeah, I thought she figured that if she hit her voting base hard, she figured she could win, then get in office and work with others to establish a more solid base. The old rule of getting elected is that you reach out to those who didn't support you, to gain their support.. so in the future, it would be difficult for someone else to run against you, but she doesn't seem to be branching out in terms of trying to gain the support of those who were against her during the election.
She will probably end up being a one term mayor.

I've got bad news for ya buddy. It's only going to get worse. BR is a dump. Y'all going to need to build that wall along Florida in order to survive.

The reason is that her black base is skeptical of her. Many of them turned on Kip during his last term, and wrote him off as an Uncle Tom. Many in NBR have suspicions that SWB is cut from the same cloth. She's bringing in her main democratic challenger, Denise Marcelle, to solidify that base and to head off her main competitor for that base. The problem is that Marcelle is absolutely toxic race-baiting filth, and could poison any support she currently has with the business community and white urban voters. SWB will have to walk a tight line between appeasing the race-baiters to keep her base and head-off black primary challengers and continuing Kip's economic development in order to win over enough of the white vote to stay in power, and prevent investment from fleeing the city.
She has to do all of this while the city recovers from the worst flood in its history (worse than 1927, even) AND preside over a powder-keg of racial animosity with the upcoming announcement of whether or not charges will be brought against the officers involved in the Alton Sterling shooting. It's an impossible predicament to be in. If she caters to the blacks, the whites and the money men will abandon her and the city, and all of the progress Kip made over the last 12 years will vanish over night. If she continues his model, NBR will accuse her of being an Uncle Tom and only helping out the white folk. The black vote will revolt and she'll get primaried.
