According to this article, more than 100k Baton Rouge homes are at risk for hurricane storm surge damage, with 6K in the extreme risk zone. However, the article doesn't really explain the area at risk.

I was surprised seeing this number as I wouldn't think any Baton Rouge homes would really be at risk for storm surge damage. I could see some homes in the surrounding parishes being at risk with storm surge into Ponchatrain and then Maurepas ect. But not 100K in Baton Rouge.

Any ideas as to the areas that would be considered "extreme risk"? Is it the same areas that experienced flooding last August Areas bordered by Bayou Manchac?

Maybe if a storm hit the mouth of the river right now.

How so? Isn't Baton Rouge a good 100 miles inland? That seems insane.

They have to be basing this on a major levee failure.

And yet they swear they don't need flood insurance.

If a storm pushes a 20 foot storm surge above sea level, how the frick does it reach a city located 30 to 50 feet above sea level?

Yep, that's all this is. That's the best industry to be in in the BR area - the study bidness.

You hand the parish a report and they be all:

Then, time for another study

Baton Rouge is 80-100 miles inland and 50-60' above sea level. A category 5 hurricane couldn't push a storm surge into an area that far inland and that high above sea level. BR's only risk of flooding from a hurricane is if it passes to the west and is a slow moving storm that dumps a shite ton of rain for an extended period.

I would imagine they're basing all this on the storm surge backing up Maurepas, Pontchartrain, and the diversion canal thus creating an situation similar to the 2016 flood.

I would assume the risk is due to the river being so high?

Mississippi River? Storm surge isn't going to travel 100 miles upriver.
