Banned baby names in New Zealand

LINK

quote:

As reported by the Daily Telegraph, the list of 77 names shows that the parents of one child wanted to call it 'Anal'

Other names on the list included "4Real", "V8", and "Queen Victoria".

In some cases, parents appeared to have lost any inspiration for coming up with a moniker for their offspring, wanting to call the latest addition to the family simply "2nd", "3rd" or "5th".

The department's rules forbid any name that might imply a child holds an official title or rank, so "King", "Duke" and "Princess" were among those that had been turned down most since 2001.

"Justice" was the most popular, having been rejected 62 times, although "Justus" and "Juztice" also failed to gain official approval.

In 2008, New Zealand's family court ordered that a nine-year-old girl whose parents had called her "Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii" should have her name changed because it was embarrassing and "makes a fool of the child".

At the time, judge Rob Murfitt criticised parents who gave their children bizarre names, citing examples such as "Number 16 Bus Shelter", "Midnight Chardonnay" and twins called "Benson" and "Hedges".

Other suggested names on the list included 'Lucifer', 'Mafia No Fear' and 'Queen Victoria'

Yeah...those names suck, but isn't the real story that authorities can tell you what you can and cannot name your baby in New Zealand?

What? Regardless of what could be argued as good intentions, doesn't that seem crazy?

Take the Lucifer example. That's a freakin' angel's name. In New Zealand the government can tell you that you can;t name your kid after an angel...because some people may be offended or scared of the name?

Dunno'...seems like a fairly big intrusion on parental rights if you ask me.

That being said...New Zealand sure is pretty.

Didn't George Foreman do something like this? George Jr, George III, George IV, George V, and George VI.

I can definitely get behind this. We need someone to rule on stupid names here in America.

re: Banned baby names in New Zealand
I typically support fewer government intrusions but strangely enough, I support this. I feel as though this is not the government sticking its nose in their business, as much as it is the government restricting stupidity. I support common sense. Always have, always will. Even if it is required by the government lol.

Proves parents were not mature enough for children. Kid should be given to a responsible adult couple trying to adopt.

I get what you're saying, and I don't even really disagree with it. But doesn't the child have a right to not look like a moron because the parents named him/her something ridiculous?

I go the different direction. I say let people name their children whatever they want. Easier to pick out the crazies that way.

"Hey girl, whats your name?"
"Number 16 Bus Shelter, whats yours?"
"Nevermind"

Looking in the comment section, there must be a shite load of La-as here in the US... or everyone has the same aunt/mom/friend who taught this one girl.

Odds are the kid is going to be just as dumb as the parents. We're just able to tell it at an earlier age
