Basically, girl in Texas is convicted of stealing cars and attempting to burn down the dealership to conceal evidence. Serves sentence. Gets out, applies to UNO, confesses to her past on application, gets denied. Applies again, doesn't admit past, gets scholarship.

Crimes like rape, sexual battery, stalking etc must still be disclosed. Everything else can't be asked on initial app. What do you think?

If it's not expunged, it should be disclosed.

I would think everything could be asked.

Why should sexual crimes be the only no go-s?

Let's look at it in another way.

You're accepted and while in college are caught with weed or get a DUI. Maybe assault or domestic violence. Convicted. Like for like, you're kicked out immediately. Anyone up for that?

If you want to take it to that extreme, then yes I would be for it if convicted felons have to disclose that they are in fact a convicted felon.
ETA: Especially if they are on scholarship and using someone else's money to go to school.

If that's the college's standards that are applied across the board, yes.

This is where it starts. Next thing an employer won't be able to ask if the applicants are convicted of a crime. Imagine if a former bank robber applied to work at a bank; or a guy with three DWIs applying to drive a school bus?

If you do the crime, then you are forever someone who committed said crime. There are consequences to your actions. Welcome to the adult world.

50,000+ people apply to major colleges, if some BS high school participation in a group that every senior puts on their college app is relevant, then a criminal record should be as well.

I'd imagine a class full of teens with misdemeanors would be less likely to commit felonies then a class full of freshman with clean records.

Would you want your kid stuck in a dorm room with a murderer or rapist?

Hell, I'd be happy if just wouldn't be able to ask what race you are on applications.

Well according to the girl from Sammy's, it's normal to have a felony conviction or two.

And keep in mind...your kid likely will not have the right to keep a weapon with them on campus to even defend themselves.

Personally I think the whole "ban the box" movement is another means of removing personal accountability from society.

Criminal background should be much more a priority in hiring/acceptance practices than race/ethnicity/gender. The former is an indication of character. The latter is completely irrelevant in nearly every inquiry.

Schools need to look at the safety of their students. Violent crimes, even if sentence is served, provide a threat to the existing student body. The school should be able to look at that.
Felonies and drug possession are not the same thing. I think any misdemeanor isn't necessarily a big deal. If you're a felon, schools should be allowed to accept or reject you based on that.
I'm all for rehabilitation of criminals, but I'm also for schools deciding that their campus isn't the right place for your rehabilitation.

Why didn't she get her degree in prison like other convicts?

I'm not so much anti-box and think you should be allowed to gather info... but in my experience many many people use it too quickly as an automatic disqualification, which is disappointing

Agreed, it's college and not a job.

The college can and should look after the safety of their students. A violent criminal history should certainly be considered in admissions.

A misdemeanor charge like drug possession should be irrelevant as let's face it a considerable amount of students and faculty are smoking dope at every University in the country. The only difference being that they've never faced prosecution.

My point was that criminal offenses should be taken into account, they're more relevant then an 8th grade mathletes award
