It always cracks me up when one of those older baws complain about me reading on my phone when I complete twice the task in a shift that they do because I don't work slow and try to milk them.

What really aggravates me is when an older operator thinks he's someone's boss because he's been there longer. You're coworkers you not his/her boss as long as he/she gets the job done safely and efficiently he/she doesn't have to do it your way.

I noticed the baws always complaining about someone being "lazy" is just a ploy to make someone look bad because they don't like them personally.

I have mixed reviews on this.
When I worked in a big dept some people were scared of technology until you explained it to them and how it could benefit them. I agree most just want to ride it out and are afraid of change. That is human nature.

Now as a small business person yeah I love technology, apps, and anything else new. Most of your customers either shop online, get reviews on line, or like to come to the store with items ready to pickup or have it shipped. I have looked at this well before smart phones. I did offer some call ahead or email ahead and pickup your orders. If someone came to me to show me the next new gadget will make me more money, I will always give them my time. Yes, it cost on the front end while it pays off on the backend.

Huge difference when it is your business most owners will listen if it makes them more money.

Big organization most people are best down and feel the corp will always be there to pay them their check. They have no incentive to change.

Our company is doing quite well actually. We do have our share of clowns but nothing extraordinary or atypical for the industry. Maybe a real out of bounds power trip here and there but those get checked quickly.

Not allowing employees to use email to communicate is ordinary for the industry you work in?

What the hell industry is that?

Reminds me of the guys I am training has to be given every single answer. His ability to self start and solve a problem is absent.

No doubt he is smart, but everything is face value and there is no initiative to look deeper to what is really happening.

I don't lump his who generation together though.

Sorry to say but I don't think it's a baby boomer problem, its a Louisiana problem. At least that's what I've noticed when dealing with the operations side of my industry.

Oh look. This thread has turned into another one of these threads.

I've worked with boomers many times, especially in construction. Some have been great, others have been terrible. One thing I noticed in common with the people that perpetuate the "millenials are lazy" meme is boomers that have worked their way up in the position they are in. They started out on their tools, then foreman, then supervisor, on up into management.

They carry a chip on their shoulder because they worked their way into management and learned the industry with sweat equity. "And you people just want all the answers and don't want to work for anything. You're lazy."

Funny thing is, you know how many of these guys just became successful carpenters, mechanics, techs etc on day one? Zero. They learned from someone, at a time when apprenticeship was still common. Old man Bob didn't just walk out of high school and know how to frame a house despite what he might tell you.

And in my experience, any boomer (or anyone in general) I've come across that perpetuates this meme has been a very poor manager.

I can't tell you how many times I've come across people that wouldn't take the time to teach me the secrets and tricks of my business because of shite like this. I'm only 35, but I always make time for younger people on my field that ask questions. I try to steer and encourage them to develop their own solutions by asking things like "What would you do?"

I remember what it was like graduating college on a Friday and finding a set of prints on my desk Monday morning with my boss telling me "Go build this. Let me know when you're done." It's the only job I didn't make money on in my entire career because I didn't know what the hell I was doing. I would never put a guy fresh out of college through something like that.

This is exactly what I am talking about. I run across too many people today that believe there is only one answer, and just want the answer so they can regurgitate it.

When I ask, "what do you think?" It is one of the hardest questions of their life. They expect a book to walk them through.

I'd love to see a company function or not function with only boomers and millennials. It would be the greatist reality show.

They love to do what they can to discredit people's education, putting young people in unwinnable situations makes their nuts tingle.

I too work for a giant company in a white collar setting. Idk what industry you are in, but you're wrong about how business works. Maybe you've created that in your mind, but in my experience the younger folks feel far inferior to the seasoned veterans.

The problem is "self start" is an excuse to poorly train someone.

Because 90% of the time they are inferior.

That doesn't mean the younger folks aren't capable, or bring things to the table. They are full of ambition and ideals. The balance of the veterans with experience and failure is vital. If not, the same failures are bound to happen.

I too used to complain about the veterans and how they were dinosaurs holding the company back. As more of the big picture has been revealed my opinion has changed.

When your job is 100% self start it is what needs to be shown from day one. OJT means I have a job to do, plus train someone. I can't, and won't, be a professor and lecture what it in your training manual.

I was simply saying I don't see younger folks in the business world that think they know more than the older generation. But I'm also in a field that you never really can learn it all, and experience is the best teacher. I'm only 29 fwiw and the older folks I work with have forgotten more than I know.
