My kid turns 16 in a few months, and I was planning on buying him a new Mustang ecoboost (the 4-cyl). Just called State Farm for a quote, and with all the discounts (good student, drivers' ed) it is nearly $6K/yr. - so there goes the Mustang. This seems a little outrageous. Of course, I could call around for other quotes, but switching from Progressive to State Farm saved me over $1,500/yr. since it gave me a big discount on my homeowners as well. I've always planned on making him pay half of his insurance to help teach him a little fiscal responsibility. Is everyone really paying this much for teen auto insurance on a decent car?

Mustang = "performance vehicle"

Same thing happened to me on my damn Z71. Insurance sucks.

Yeah.. honestly i'd avoid anything in that realm of car..4cyl or not .. tis still going to be listed as as a performance or sports type car..and with a 16 male ...prepare to pay

Depends on your coverage, but if you're in Louisiana I'm honestly not surprised.

Males in general are typically expensive to insure until they hit 25... Mainly b/c we men in our youth tend to be full on retards when behind the wheel

I work in insurance, on the carrier side, albiet in commercial lines and not personal, but I know enough to be able to say for certain that the company and its systems give not one single frick that it is a 4 cylinder. They are not that sophisticated. It/they see "16 year old" and "Mustang" and that's all she wrote. Hit him a Volvo station wagon or an old pickup and watch that premium fall. It'll still be a lot, but you are mad if you get him anything classed as "performance", deserving or not.

It doesn't change much.
I'm 22 and get discounts for drivers ed, gpa, and safe driver.

Still pay 3k a year because of my car I drive

Yeah, I guess I was asking if he carries minimum liability vs. something like 250/500.

When my were teens not that long ago it was $100 month each to add as authorized driver and another $100 each when they got their cars. Girl was a little cheaper. The rates dropped after 3yrs. Make and model make a big difference.

I have always wondered this. If you lend your car to a friend and he gets in a wreck. Does your insurance cover damages or does his auto insurer cover damage? If your insurance covers damage why couldn't you just do the same with a teen? "They were just borrowing car and doesn't drive it usually."

Listen up.

No 2 doors.

No 8 cylinders.

No 4 wheel drives.

No convertibles.

No sports cars.

The rules change when a driver lives in your house most of the time.

If they do and are not covered for your household vehicles, your carrier may leave you on your own if they have an at fault accident.

Put car in your name and insurance in your name.

In 1998 my mustang in my name was $250 month in my dads $72 month.

Call geico. They saved me about 600/yr but they saved my coworker about 2k a year bc she has her 2 teenage drivers on her insurance.
