What's the OTs experience here for a young professional?... If I am waiting to hear back on a better job offer how do I go about letting my first offer (received this afternoon) know I need time? Is asking for a week unreasonable? Is it offensive to let the first offer know that I want time to evaluate all my options (obviously not telling them they are 2nd in line)? I won't know if I'll be extended the second offer until next wednesday

No im not deciding between Wendys and Taco Bell

You gotta tell us what kind of young professional you are first

My guess is life insurance. Guys who sell life insurance use the term young professional

That’s a gamble if it’s your first job.

Better to counter offer. These folks aren’t going to let you shop their price.

If it's your first adult job, don't mess around. They will probably know what you're doing if you take too long. If you're leaving a good job and it is obvious that you're weighing the options, I think you have slightly more time.

I wouldn't tell them directly you're waiting on another job. I'd ask them when they expect a response by and act according.

It may not sound ethical, but you could always accept the current offer while waiting to hear back on the second offer. If you end up getting the second job, then you simply apologize to the first company and let them know that you've decided to accept a better offer.

Which job do you want? Take the one you want. And take that leap of faith.

That's really dangerous advice. It is a small small world.

When do they want you to start? If it's 3 weeks, say nothing and wait for the other people. Even if you start next week, what do you give a shite about burning a bridge about a place you've been working at for a week. Better for you to be immediately out than for you to be there 4 months and after spending all the money for training that you're out then.

Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach.. sell life insurance.

I'm in the grain business. First offer is from a large corporate company. Second business is a small startup office that can offer quite a bit more due to having 8 employees

This is true, but a lot depends on how different the jobs are. If both jobs are in the same region and industry, then you probably shouldn't start burning bridges.

Yep, first job, this is the way to go. You'll be there for a few weeks tops and no need to put it on the resume. Don't smack off to them if you have no experience. Just go with the flow. Plus if they liked the person they hired you over, it's pretty simple just to bring them in. It happens with recent grads.

Well that may be a bit more of an issue then. I went through something similar where I got a marketing job, but 2 months later got an outside sales job offer from a former boss that I really wanted. Turned in my two weeks notice, and have since left them off the resume and just put that with a 2 month gap on the resume instead. It wasn't that tightly knit of an industry, so got off scot free. If everyone knows everyone in your industry though, you may need to think it through a bit more carefully than my initial advice.

Remember when LA Tech turned down the Liberty Bowl a few years ago because they thought they could do better? Don't be LA Tech.

Is this your first major league job? I know that if I took the time to interview you (likely twice), and you didn't jump at it, I'd be insulted.

I mean, you get a day or two to call a mentor or your dad to make sure it's smart... but...

Asking for a week is not unreasonable. Be polite and respectful. Say that you'd like to discuss this with your family and that you are taking the time to seriously consider it.
