This is my first experience in a youth sports all star team. Some of the moms of kids on the team are all excited and asking local businesses for donations for the team.

If the team really needed donations for equipment to play or even uniforms, ok. I get it.

Here is my problem. The moms want to ask for donations for the team to have matching bag and helments that they will use for one fricking tournament. The kids already have bags and helments. I feel like this is not proper in any way, shape or form. Hell, some of the businesses they are hitting up for donations make less than some parents by a long shot. (Especially me given im posting on the OT, obviously.)

Am I wrong here in quietly not participating in this?

Yes, it has gotten out of control, I don't mind supporting the local schools teams, and don't even mind buying jambalaya plates or raffle tickets, but when these all star or travel teams ask for donations, I think it has gone too far , if you choose for your kid to play, then pay for it

Ok. So once would've been a typo. More than once, though?

Do you think the word 'helmet' has an 'n' in it, seriously?

I think people/businesses in general are more apt to give if they are getting something in return.
Lunch plate, raffle ticket.. Something other than just a handout.

Tell them to make the donations for the Youth Summer Boys T-ball All City-Conference-Championship ring.

If they want to ask and the businesses are informed as to how the money will be spent, I don't see the problem. If a business wants to decline, that is 100% acceptable too. If you don't want to participate, that is also fine.

Im not giving a god damn thing to a group of kids standing outside of wal marks "tryin ta go to state" while their parents sit in the shade.

Lately there have been a group of young girl softball players at the entrance to a busy shopping center in Bossier just standing there holding cardboard posters with a hand out for money. Their parents sit in their cars in the bank parking lot next to the entrance.

They need to be selling plate lunches, washing cars, something....

ETA: Parents sit in '16 LTZ Suburbans and F250s. Not sure if truck nuts, I could only see the front end.

He thought the "LSU" and "Tiger" were spelled with a "5" and a "1", so why don't you give him a break.

Never pass up the chance to tell little shits looking for a handout that money is to be earned, not gifted. I know they'll never hear anything remotely close to that from their mother or any of the dozen or so half siblings so I consider it infinitely more valuable than my 2 bucks momma gonna use to pick up some fresh grape blunt wraps ya'urd

Hellmints?

Regardless, it's not travel ball. It's a local league all star thing. No, my kid ismt close to being the best one out there. No, I don't think the coach is crazy for not playing my kid elsewhere/more. I just keep score for them because the rest of the folks are too busy screaming at their kids.

My follow up question is this:

Do I say something or keep my mouth shut?

Some of the parents would likely not be able to afford new stuff as easily as others. I'd hate for their kid to be left out or their parents be strapped if the other harpies decide to get new stuff.

My understanding is that the businesses are simply being asked for a donation to xyz team. It's for unnecessary things to be used at one tournament.

No.

I want to say the business owners that donate money are in the wrong for perpetuating this practice, but I can't bring myself to it. I'll just say the mom's are morally bankrupt if they can afford things that they expect other people to pay for.

I own a business and I'm sure I'll sponsor my kid's teams when the time comes, but I'm not going to give money so your team can play in an AAU tournament this weekend, or get new batting gloves, or got to a camp. If you really want my money, I'll buy jambalaya/bbq chicken dinners every time.

I pretty much give to anyone who asks for dance programs and small donations under $100.
I would have no problems buying teams uniforms, but I don't like the wasteful things like you describe.

Horrible time to start. End of year - late tax breaks; beginning of the year - when they allocate funds available for charitable donations expense.

Most businesses are getting slammed all year round due to the influx in fricking travel baseball, not to mention the AAU circuit, summer league teams, etal.
