Cheerleading coach Ozell Williams is at the center for a firestorm that erupted Wednesday after 9NEWS reported on his practices and aired one of eight videos obtained by 9Wants to Know that show girls in agony as he shoved them to the ground.

Two more videos aired by 9NEWS Thursday show the same thing -- teenage girls crying and screaming in agony and begging Williams to stop.

The story led Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg to place Williams, East High Principal Andy Mendelsberg, Athletic Director Lisa Porter, assistant Cheer Coach Mariah Cladis and the district’s Deputy General Counsel Michael Hickman on leave.

Thursday afternoon, Boulder High Principal James A. Hill sent a note home to parents, saying he was “horrified” by what he saw in the 9NEWS reports and acknowledging that Williams “unfortunately, had connections to our cheerleading squad.”

quote:

In this following 38-second video, a cheerleader starts in a lunge position, with her front knee slightly bent.

About 13 seconds into the video, her front leg slides into a straight position, and the screaming intensifies.

Her teammates tell her to “squeeze us, squeeze!”

Williams continues to hold her in place, and is seen shoving his knee into her upper thigh to push her lower toward the ground. The girl cries out, “I can’t” in apparent anguish.

She begins to bend her front knee and the coach can be heard shouting out, “keep her leg straight.”

She continues screaming out, until ultimately, after about 25 seconds, she is pushed out of the position onto her stomach on the mat.

Another video shows a girl screaming as teammates holder her arms and legs and Williams tells her to “stop moving, stay still.”

The girl’s screaming and crying intensifies.

At that point Williams pats the girl on the shoulder and tells her, “stop screaming.”

“Please help me,” the girl wails. “Help me up. Help me up. Help me up.”

“You stay there,” Williams tells her.

Denver Police child abuse detectives are investigating, although it is too early to know whether criminal charges could be filed.

The video is a little tough to watch.

Not only is that cheerleading coach in deep trouble, the school district is, too. This all happened June, and the school district did nothing until this month even though they had access to the video.

Heard about this yesterday. Said they have had a claim in for months and only did something after local news picked it up. It wouldn't have taken months if that were my daughter.

If that was one of my family members? Louisville Slugger. Knee caps. No one involved would ever walk right again.

If you are OK with summer HS football training and the abuse the kids receive there, you must also be OK with this.

I kind of thought that is how you get to be able to do the splits. Maybe I got that from the movie Bloodsport, where they tied JCVD to a tree and forced his legs apart. He screamed the whole time..

So fricking what? You have to do the splits to be cheerleader, either quit...or we'll help you. Yea it hurts, you don't have the will power to stretch like that on your own and suffer incremental pain...so quit or we'll show you what it takes. Get over it.

How were they cheerleaders if they couldn't do the splits?

He is the 'do a split' coach. Wth do you expect if you are a cheerleader.

Oh, the meanie coach wants my daughter to do a split in an activity where a split is required. Parents gonna break Kneecaps..lol

A. Who the frick has a grown man coaching high school cheerleaders?

2. If that was my daughter and a grown man was doing that to her - we would have problems. I'll leave it at that.

III. Cheerleading isn't a real sport, it's a booster activity/popularity contest. They should stop taking it so fricking seriously.

I was a cheerleader. Could only do a split on one side. I could flip all the way down the football field, and that was more important. Only the dance team was required to try out with splits.

That said, this technique is stupid. He wants them to do splits either require it at tryouts or incorporate lengthy stretching exercises into practice until they get it.

If your body is telling you "hey, feel this extreme pain? maybe you should stop doing whatever it is you're doing"...then maybe it isn't a good idea.
