The seven people gathered around a high-top table on a drizzly Saturday afternoon were united by a single cause: to chuck it all.

They’d come to Busboys and Poets for the inaugural meeting of Washington’s newest Meetup group, The Quitters’ Club. Tagline: “Let’s Give Up on Our Dreams .?.?. Together!”

One was ready to cast aside her long-held ambition to become an actress. Same deal for a would-be writer. Another attendee was ready to quit Washington. The hodgepodge group of strangers were drawn together by a call that landed in each of their inboxes.

“Most of us have something special we’d like to do with our lives,” it said. “Often this Holy Grail does us more harm than good; costing valuable time, resources and relationships. Eff all that noise. At the Quitters’ Club — our club — we can help each other stomp out the brush fires set in our hearts, and get on with our lives.”

The Quitters Club

Interesting article.

Do you have a dream or life goal for which you're having trouble climbing back down the fence?

There's a diff between having a dream and having unreal expectations. I think we all would agree its be pretty bad arse to be a rock star but mostly all of us dont pursue it because we are smart enough to realize we don't have the talent. Some people continue to pursue things claiming its their dream, when they're actually just not cut out for it. Liek the actress and writer. HOW do you not know if you're not that good of a writer? and yet you keep trying? imagination and creativity aren't something you teach yourself.

Similar to this train of thought, I think the whole "do what you love" mantra is a bunch of bullshite. Very very few people will actually enjoy a profession they truly love. The goal really is to do something that allows you to do what you love.

If you want to travel the world, well find a way to be able to fund that.

If you love spending time with your family, find a way to do that as much as possible without risking you and their livelihood.

I would imagine for many it's not being ignorant of a lack of talent. It probably stems more from being cursed with a burning passion that can't be realized, or it's been that person's identity for so long, or that person has gone "all in" with a time/energy/financial investment and struggles to cut his/her losses.

Nobody should ever do that. Without dreams and goals your life is going to most likely up shitty.

I can see that point, too. Maybe some need to just replace one dream for another.

I've spent a lot of time with aspiring writers, all of whom, without exception, have a barely-in-progress novel or screenplay stored on a hard drive somewhere. They'll probably never finish it. It's this perpetual work-in-progress that keeps the dream alive. They're a delusional bunch. I used to be one of them.

I have a dream that I am pursuing with gusto. frick giving up on it. It's not like I have more than one life to live and just because it doesn't happen when I'm 30 fricking years old doesn't mean it won't happen.

What a stupid attitude. Even if you never achieve your dream, pursuing with rational exuberance is far more delightful than dumping it to be "happy." Particularly since none of those people will really ever forgive themselves for it.

That's likely the problem for those mentioned in the article. It sounds like pursuing the dream had become tedious and unfulfilling over time. Just going through the motions because it had always been their "dream."

I always kinda wonder about the people I see in menial/boring/whatever jobs...there's no way they wanted to grow up to be a trash collector/janitor/post office worker/parking lot attendant/etc. They all probably wanted to be something more but life happened and they just had to do something to pay the bills. It's life but it's just so sad. It reminds me to not settle...!

You don't suppose more than a few of these people are still actively pursuing (or at least harboring) a dream of some kind--whether career or otherwise?

Probably. It's just when you see the older people that seem resigned to doing whatever, like their chance has passed...

I still dream that I will find my golf swing again, get healthy then qualify for a web.com event...then get to where I always knew I belonged...the PGA Tour.

Reality - I'll work for rich people doing their accounting work and try to hustle old men from their social security money on the course.

I guess there is a little of the relinquishing the perception of control aspect to the group.

While most are probably just taking whatever they can get to support themselves/family, some people actually choose menial jobs simply as a means of funding their true life pursuits, and those pursuits don't necessarily have to be grandiose dreams of fame and fortune. A job that lets you leave work at work, doesn't stress you out, requires no emotional investment or exhaustive intellect, etc. can be very appealing. Some people are successful at doing what they love and continue to love it, while others are most successful with a career based purely on skills.

I'm a person who can't mix work and hobbies. I've always been the polymath type, someone who jumps from hobby to hobby for the enjoyment of learning it, a jack of all trades and a master of few. When any one of those hobbies becomes an obligation, it's no longer fun for me. It's not that I suddenly hate it, but it morphs from passion to skill pretty quickly. There is no single field/activity/skill I can think of that I would genuinely enjoy if I knew I had to do it for over 2,000 hours a year to keep my family fed and clothed.
